Both sides have lots of tools for interesting matchups. IJN air especially land based (Ki-67 is amazing) dramatically improved but a prepared USN air defense is second to none. I have seen alot of Iowa's defeated by the IJN as Yamato/Musashi or LLT are bad matchups. But of course alot of USN air power can be a bad match for unprepared IJN builds as well.
I haven't played with much of the new Wunderwaffe KM units i could definately see the Me-262, He-177 giving the USN serious trouble.

I've had USN fleets get wrecked by He-177s and their antiship missiles, though it requires some coordination and you better hope the Americans don't have some interceptors waiting in the wings (a Bf-109 can handle that, though)
The man who gets beat down isn't the loser. The guy who can't tough it out to the end, he's the one who loses.
Late war the USN is almost unstoppable. It was that way when Wizards stopped the game. We tried to change that with the Forumini decks, but the US still kept coming back. Historically, the problem is the US was the only navy with a still intact (and enormous) shipbuilding industry by 1944.
It's really hard to beat the price/performance of those Navy Corsair fighter/bombers on capacity 4 carriers.
