My daughter and I played AAM when in first released in 2006ish. She found 40K and our minis found eBay. I’ve mostly finished building out all the fleets I want for WAS and decided I’d dabble in AAM again.
While reading tonight, I saw some threads that hinted that people were using AAAF minis with the AAM game. Is that a thing? I see the plane stats mixed in with AAM database when I’ve been researching more purchases. I just assumed it was mixed in for ease, but I notices the stat cards looked real similar, but wasn’t sure if those were the original cards from the AAAF game (I had a booster years ago). Just curious if people are mixing it in.
I recall the games being about 100 pts and that seems to be what I’ve seen about tournaments. I read a match recap recently on here and it was 100 points. I’m sure people are playing higher point values, but I’m curious about the point values that people are playing. I was assuming it would be easy enough to put together a 200 point game, but was curious.
The AAAF game was made to be used with AAM. It has the same 1:100 scale, and the stats you see are official stats you can find in the air game rulebook. Similar to the sea game, you can upscale the game by playing at higher point values but the sweet spot for AAM is 100 points. With 200 you have a lot more units to fire and account for, and then you can also have 2 or 3 super tanks that can’t be destroyed by hardly anything in the game and can one-shot a lot of those opposing pieces.
I’ve not played a 200-point game though, what do you guys see?
Thank you for the quick reply. I never knew AAAF was created for integration into AAM. That’s good news that I can now expand my options….less good news for the wallet. I guess I need to figure out of my OCD can handle the site of tiny AAM plane flying along side the larger planes. Thanks again, I had no clue about that.
And thanks for the information on the points. I was hoping to play some 200 point value games . Guess I’ll see how that goes.
You can build as big as you want really or with some research, you can re-create most any battle on any front depending on what countries you have & how big a collection & what variety of units for Order of Battle.
AAM also plays well with some other game systems I've heard. I use some Advanced Squad Leader terrain & LOS rules sometimes with the Deluxe ASL boards I have. It works quite well.
Enjoy exploring & getting reacquainted with the Dryside, we need more new blood to keep it alive.
You can also use the small planes with the AAAF cards. I use the small planes since they take up less space on the map when deployed & some were not reproduced in AAAF, so there are some that are only in the smaller scale.
Also the Meteor & Donier Do 335, the Push/Pull twin engine plane. It would make an interesting addition as well as the jets to the air game I think. Planes in the land game are abstract units at best...strafers with MG's & rockets & some can bomb but air to air is not really an aspect of the land game. That being said, I do use planes in games but sometimes add & use house rules to make it a bit more realistic....I have a "Flight Path" houserule....a hexrow is chosen for the plane & it enters & exits on that row...it is also subject to any eligible "Defensive Fire" along that path....planes don't just appear this way but it is a Land Combat game anyways....planes are optional.
Enjoy however you play. I experiment with "Freestyle" play, mix countries that are opposite in the basic game is 1 way, another is try "Patton's Idea", fight the Russians then as he postulated & he passed away shortly thereafter, no tinfoil hats please...the system is flexible enough & there are other's houserules too so it is kind of an open ended system that can be used with several gaming systems. It also looks way cooler than the old Avalon Hill Bookcase games & stacks of cardboard squares that were always getting knocked over.

Ha. At 60 yo, I Am not sure I have any young bold left. I decided over the weekend to use both smaller and larger planes. My OCD will have fits, but the wallet will be happy. I will check out the ASL option. A friend works there.

60 huh....on Monday the 22nd I hit 67 & I still think young....I think....lol
ASL is still the cardboard squares I think but the Deluxe ASL boards are what you should look for. They have 2 1/4" hexes & the buildings can have different levels if desired. The scale was 50 yds per hex but it converts to AAM easily.
Totally understand about happy wallets too....for some vehicles I have done Zvezda models & just tried & like Miniature Tanks Company. 3D prints 15MM-1/100 scale, easy assembly, glue tracks to hull, prime & paint & ready for gaming.
My friend that works for ASL pointed me in the direction of the Deluxe ASL maps as well. He remembers AAM (he’s a game store owner) and thought the Deluxe maps were the way to go. Obviously, you shared that with me already, but he was able to give me a lot of details.
Thanks again for mentioning the ASL option. I would never have connected the maps I’d scene in his store to being useful.
