Kunming Raid
Flying Tigers Scenario 1 Background: 9:30 a.m. Saturday December 20, 1941, Yunnan, ChinaIt was 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 20, before the warning net reported that ten bombers had crossed into Yunnan province from Indochina. At Wu Chia Ba, the red flare went up and sixteen 1st Squadron Tomahawks rolled down the gravel runway and rose into the air. The Adam & Eves climbed to 15,000 feet and flew southeast. As the assault echelon, Sandy Sandell and his men would prowl fifty miles of railroad track from Kunming to Iliang, intercepting the Japanese bombers as they flew “IFR” to the target.

Aftermath
Almost certainly, this was what happened: the two outside bombers, and probably the lead bomber, were hit again and again by the full force of the AVG. In any event, more claims were lodged than the were Lilys on the ground. A Chinese listening post reported seven bombers aloft at 11:25 A.M. So, three planes were shot down in the battle itself. The pilots voted to share the credit among all those who had joined the fight: fourteen Adam & Eves plus Ed Rector of the Panda Bears. On the record, then, each man was credited with four-fifteenths of a Ki-48.
