I'm helping my friend Maus with the creation of British/Australian Matilda II Mark IV Close Support Tank. Right now this is the starting point for the stats:
Vehicle - Tank
Year = 1940
Points = 14
Speed = 2
Defense = 6/5
Attack values:
Soldier = 8/7/5
Vehicle = 6/5/4
Superior frontal armor - An attack against this unit's front defense must beat it by 2 or more in order to score two hits against it.
Fire Smoke - Something to reflect this variant's doctrine that said it was suppose to "smoke parts of the enemy force" and so isolate them from the battle. Perhaps once a game drop smoke in any hex within range but a successful roll must first be achieved.
It appears that the Australians used this variant the most having entire squadrons of this type. Otherwise British Matilda squadrons had maybe one command tank as this variant.
So my questions are:
Do the combat stats match this type of gun?
How should a "Fire Smoke" SA be worded?
Any other Special Abilities that should be added to this Matilda variant?
Many moons ago Sharpe had a smoke special ability that we used a few times in a couple of games.
SMOKE: As only action in Movement Phase, the unit may roll AI dice. With 3 successes, place a Smoke in hex in range and LOS from the unit.
Sounds interesting. I assume by AI you mean Attack Infantry dice. So if I have 4 dice at long range I need 3 successes out of 4. Whereas at close range I might have 8 dice and have a better chance of succeeding to get the 3 successful rolls.

Correct plus can be used all game but need to decide if you would rather move or deploy smoke during the movement phase
Following up on what I last posted, in British service this tank was used as a command tank in Matilda squadrons. So here is what I came up with including the new "Fire Smoke" special ability.
Matilda II Mk IV CS
Vehicle - Tank Commander
United Kingdom
Year = 1940
Points = 15
Speed = 2
Defense = 6/5
Attack values:
Soldier = 8/7/5
Vehicle = 6/5/4
Superior Frontal Armor 2 - An attack against this unit’s front defense must beat it by 2 or more in order to score two hits against it.
Commander Abilities Initiative +1
Fire Smoke - As its' only action in the movement phase, this unit may target any hex within range and line of sight with a smoke screen. Roll Attack vs Soldier dice appropriate for the range and if 3 successes are rolled, place smoke in that hex. A smoke screen blocks line of sight into, out of and through its hex. Remove the smoke screen at the end of the turn.
Flavor Text: In British service, this close support (CS) variant was used as a command vehicle in Matilda tank squadrons. It came equipped with a QF 3 inch (76 mm) howitzer, firing high explosive or smoke shells.
* I bumped up the point cost to 15 instead of 14. Is this enough? * I reworded the suggested smoke SA to make it clear how it should be used. One thought, instead of firing the smoke in the movement phase, why not do it in the assault phase? After all, this tank fired smoke shells, so the player could decide to fire the smoke instead of an HE round. Maybe this SA should say "As its' only action in the assault phase...." * Added Commander Abilities and initiative +1 since this variant was used as a command vehicle.
As for the firing in the Movement Phase, perhaps you want to conceal some units moves or prevent "Overwatch" effect on moving units. Just my thought on when & how to use this SA.

Yes, I could see that. Assuming you had the initiative, this command tank would fire smoke ahead of other vehicles first. Then the other units could advance while the targeted enemy hex is blinded by the smoke screen.
I found a version of this unit designed by Thor and I think his combat stats are more in line with what the main gun should be. (Verses Soldier 8/8/7, Verses Vehicles 5/4/3). I am going to modify the stats to match this.
Each variant will now be posted in a separate thread. One for the British version and one for the Australian version.
