Do you want to win a Hellcat? Good. I want to hear some War at Sea stories. Just post here one of your favorite memories or tell the tale of a favorite game you played, really anything you want regarding War at Sea. I’ll tally up all the legal entrants and then roll the big die for a winner. For US entrants, if you win you pay nothing. For international entrants, I will pay $4 USD toward mailing the mini and card to you.
You must be a current member of the Forumini as of this post to enter and I will run the contest for a week. Have fun!
I gotta say my most favorite memory of playing War at Sea, is of having my 5 year old using his Warspite to snipe my Friedrich Der Grosse from range 6 and taking it out by hitting exactly 17 on vital armor. This happened this past weekend. He was so happy and excited. We play once a week just 2 vs 2. At least until he is older and understands more of the tactics.
Too many fave WAS events to recount, but one event stands out at the now-defunct Just By Chance games in Waterloo, Ont. Firehouse had set up a tournament with scenarios and victory conditions drawn randomly. So one side might be tasked with taking out the enemy destroyers, while the other side was supposed to escort a convoy. I brought my brother-in-law, a newbie, and we had a great time. Not knowing what the victory conditions were for your opponent made every game a challenge.
Great idea offering the Hellcat.
Those who don't remember their history are bound to do something or other...
Cool. OK, one of my favorite memories was getting my buddy Jessie into WaS. The first time he played he used my Germans against me. He brought Freddy and told me I should bring Montana...his first shot EVER from range 5 vitaled Montana with 18 successes...every die was a hit. :-o
A 200 point game I played once came down to a 1-on-1 duel between USS Washington and Vittorio Veneto. The Italians lost, but they put up a brilliant fight and could have won if they'd just landed one more shot.
The man who gets beat down isn't the loser. The guy who can't tough it out to the end, he's the one who loses.
Not a specific memory from a game so hopefully this counts, but I remember how excited I was when I first discovered this game in 8th grade. I had spent a lot of my childhood loving naval history and naturally was hooked on the concept. Opening my first booster and getting the Nagato fueled that fire even more. Above all, my favorite memory has to be the last time I took out all my ships and set them up on the table. Back when I started with a meager two boosters and a starter set in 8th grade I only had 18 ships/aircraft, with only one battleship. Compared to ~500 today, it has been a long and incredibly rewarding journey. I have included a picture for reference
Probably my love hate relationship with the Roma. If you're going to run an intiative fleet with the Italians she's usually involved. That said she tends to be the most vitalled ship in our games. Warspite has gotten her with the long shot SA and almost everyone else. When you play against someone with the lucky dice it's hard to win much. Just ended a game when the Gneisensau vitalled the Hood, not a huge issue with the 13 vital but he had 15 hits from range two. That's a lot for 12 dice.
I was just teaching the friend to play the other day and we did a convoy scenario, Japan vs. Britain (with escorting Sackvilles). He took the Japanese, and after a lot of careful movement he went in for the attack with Chokai and Kinugasa, and ended up sinking everything I had (Two cruisers, two convoys, and a carrier!) except Jervis Bay and a bare minimum of escorts. After the intense surface battle Jervis Bay sank Kinugasa, and we had a prolonged engagement between his midget submarines and patrol bombers, who managed to cripple but not to sink a third convoy. The game was neck and neck up to the end, which was heightened by the fact that we were playing with night rules after turn 4.
My friend really enjoyed the game, and he might be getting a starter set for himself and his father (whom he talked to after the game), which made the memory of this game all the better to me.

I found the game back when it was still in print, but I was like 7 years old. I was at a museum with my grandfather and he bought me the starter pack. In about 2015 I rediscovered the little collection that I had gathered through boosters and started buying minis on ebay. In around 2018 or 19 I got what I would define as a full collection: 1 of ever single ship, 2 of ever destroyer and submarine (3 for some that are more important, like the US DD's with 1941 year limits), 2 or 3 of each transport, 4 of each small boat, and 3 of each aircraft.
This is probably where you expect me to say that my collection reminds me of my grandfather or something since he sort of got me into it, but he's still alive. I like to show him it all now and then though.
I didn't get into this game until it was just about to go out of print. I have always been more into the ships/minis as opposed to the game. I've been hit with the Shapeways bug and have been trying to find and then paint minis for all of the expansions and for some of the WOTC pieces that I didn't get. Seeing all the great custom paint work on this board has been great! However, the highlight has to be finally winning one of Weeds' giveaways. Really fine work and sparked me to keep on collecting and even perhaps roll the dice once in awhile. Unfortunately, a result of winning a Weeds mini is that I've realized that those Reacher bases look really good and I just might need a few. Or perhaps more than a few!
