Firehouse and I have had at it again, Finns vs. Soviets in the early going. Four Brewsters, with modified statistics and abilities, vs. five I-16s. The Finns have not won in a number of Firehouse's by-phone AAAF games, but I was handling the Soviets today, so he had a better chance. And frankly, but for some bad dice rolls, the Soviets should have had this one. Turn one, the two groups approach each other from opposite corners, but are too far away to engage. Turn two: a lot of engagement, including solid hits on one Ishak and one Brewster. Fortunately for the Brewster, its SA of Absorb Punishment meant it could shake off the effects of being Crippled. Turn three: More engagement, and some confusion about the positions of aircraft on our two maps, thanks in part to a bad phone connection. Another Brewster hit, another I-16 crippled and the earlier crippled aircraft is flamed. Turn four: A third I-16 is crippled and another is flamed, while a crippled Brewster is flamed. Turn five: The decisive turn: Firehouse flamed another crippled Ishak and the Soviets lost their Swarm SA. The Soviets' final shot of the game missed its target entirely, and the Finns emerged with a solid solid victory.
I played with the intention of always having two I-16s targetting one Brewster on any turn, with the fifth aircraft being bait, or joining in where necessary. But once the planes were in the air, if an aircraft didn't pass a manoeuvre test, that intention would go out the window. A lot of fun.
(The antenna-style flight stands I use don't have a sixth piece, so any aircraft at Altitude Six are marked with a die with the six showing.)
Those who don't remember their history are bound to do something or other...
Great report Bill, thanks. I originally bought telescopic stands from a supplier in Florida called Corsec Engineering and they only have five altitudes. I believe Bill bought his from the same company. My new telescopic stands come from a store called Princess Auto in Canada. Not sure if they are in the USA. They were cheap @ $4, they have six altitudes and they use the original ball stand to take the different aspects (diving etc...) I will probably sell my Corces stands since the new ones are a little bit better.
