Was wondering if any of the naval lovers here have expanded their gaming world to 1/300 ships like I did. Talking about Warlords Cruel Seas I love the game and have fully invested into a Canadian fleet and German fleet. Plus merchant tankers. IMO the models are great and not hard to assemble and paint. Even a hack like me makes this scale look good. The rules are very much driven by Bolt Action mechanics, which makes it easier for players familiar with that game. They released a free PDF file for sub rules which I have tried twice and will play again. I have even commissioned some 3-D printed subs. Boomer Bill has just finished one. Just wondering??
I have focused on the RCN and KM. I bought the starter which had 4 X vospers MTBs and 4 X S-Boats. A very good investment for someone planning on playing. But these boats are not balanced. Next I bought or won two armed merchant tankers, an armed trawler and three 3-D printed merchant ships (these are custom modded into DEMS and Park class ships etc.) Also bought the KM fleet kit which is very cool IMO- Minesweeper, Flakboot, 4 X S-booats Stuka markers etc... Grabbed a two pack of KM R-boats, a very good match for the RCN MGBs I have two Flower class RCN corvettes and they are the bomb Bought a two pack of Fairmile MGBs
After market ships: KM MK IV sub 2 X Z class destroyer; Z-34 and Z-43 Tribal class destroyer HMCS Huron
I really like this game and have a view to grab the Italian fleet kit.
I/300 scale works great since after market ship models like the destroyers come in 1/350. Just a bit smaller than they should be which is awesome to fit on a gaming table with small vessels like MGB's or R-boats. Even the corvettes and minesweepers look right. Plus lots of detail for my older eyes. The WaS models are hard to see for me. I am pretty much complete for the RCN and KM but the Italy starter is calling me and I don't even speak Italian LOL
As you probably already know, I have been collecting, painting and playing with Cruel Seas ships. Currently I have American, Japanese, German and British fleets. I purchased the Italian fleet box and several individual ships, but haven't had the time to paint them as of yet. So far I have created one Pacific Theater scenario with Americans vs Japanese entitled McHales Navy. I GMed this twice during Fall In 2018 convention and it was well received. I also produced two submarine scenarios for the 2019 Fall In convention, but of course it was canceled due to Covid. They will be GMed the next time public gaming is possible. They are titled "The Happy Time" and "The Tide Turns". Both have been playtested and will be adjusted before any convention play.
Future plans involve creating a land / sea scenario based on Operation Agreement which was a british raid on German/Italian held Tobruk harbor in September 1942. Historically, it was a British failure, but has a lot of potential for a "what if" Cruel Seas scenario.
@ Sgt Fury I remember playing your McHale's Navy scenario at Fall-In but I though it was Oct 2019. Fall-In 2020 was cancelled. I have played some good convoy scenarios that could easily be worked into a convention game, whenever that is. And the free sub rules are good too IMO. One of the locals from the Barrie game group made some 3-D subs. Boomer Bill posted a pic on the Mosquito Fleet forum.
