Has anyone bought a copy of Battle for the Pacific starter set of Warlord's new game? Some of the ships are expensive, and I was wondering if anyone has figured out the Victory Points / Hull Pts basis. If so, then players could utilize their WAS fleets at no extra costs, and not have to paint alot of ships. Joe
I just looked at that the other day. I don’t know how much it is other places but it’s $72 at Noble Knight. The 1:1800 is appealing, but the resin block bases are not.
Many have commented that the bases make it look like the battle of the hovercraft. Without the pre order bundle price, it is very expensive. Solo battleships run c. 20 - 24 dollars. Plus paint & superglue. Another draw back is the resin does warp. That is why I will probably use my WAS inventory and topside minis as bases. That said, still good models of 1:1800, and the playing field is 4x6 feet with 8 turns.
I've checked out the game and I'm watching YouTube videos on the rules and how to play as I type.
Game seams very conventional (old school) with nothing new to see in it. The initiative phase is wrong with the winner moving first. Movement is fiddly and typical of naval games. Combat is a two step system. rolling D6's to hit and then rolling D6's to damage and rolling 6's mean you make another roll for a critical effect. Critical effects are too complicated and take too long to resolve, typical for a naval game. Damage record system is like Cruel Seas so not imaginative. The ship data cards have too much info on them but is typical of naval games. Combat requires too many die rolls and there's more in the end phase.
I was going to buy a starter kit but the pieces are unassembled and unpainted so for the price ($125) I'll probably not be buying another uncreative and poorly thought out Warlord game.
I'll keep developing and playing my game which is for more innovative, simpler, faster to play and more realistic.

Just wait and someone will post the cards and then all you have to do is print them and use your W@S mini's.

I have the cards for the starter set and US fleet box (that's what I bought into the game with). PM me if you want details. The way the cards are structured, one side has all the key stats for the ship, and the other side has a list of refits and upgrades ships of that class got over time. So, a 1:1 conversion from the WotC cards for W@S might be a bit wonky.
So far, the stats available for the game are somewhat limited, as it's just the cards for the ships that exist in resin for Warlord. However, by the end of the week they are supposed to be releasing a big (300-ish page) rulebook that has stats for more or less every major ship in the war, plus some what-ifs (ie, Montana). We will have to wait for that book for the big stat dump, it seems.

My friend and I have gone halves in the starter box. I have brought the Yamato model and the Japanese Fleet box.
I wasn't suggesting converting the data from the W@S cards just wait until people upload the cards and use W@S miniatures to save some money. After all the fleet box cost me $180 and each ship is $35.
It's interesting that the Yamato and Musashi get the Sub Hunter upgrades. I know the Yamato had sonar but was it actually used operationally?
I've noticed that the Fletcher and Fubuki class destroyers both have depth chargers (interestingly the Kagaros don't) but there no ASW or submarine rules in the rulebook. Maybe they will be in the big rulebook you mentioned?
It looks like they lifted the squadrons rules from Star Wars Armada? I don't like the aircraft combat, fighters "lock" bombers in place until one or the other is dead. Like in Armada you could have a big aircraft fur ball locked in place on the battlefield not moving and there's no rules in the book about what happens when a ship moves into the middle of them. The rules say they can't move so what happens? is it like Armada that the non-activating play places the flights around the ship possibly breaking engagements? Also you could have a fur ball locked into place and move a ship into the middle of it to shot at the aircraft with your ships AA. Very unrealistic which is why I rejected this system and aren't using it in my game.
Yes I would be interested in some of the ship stats so PM incoming
I have not seen any rules or cards but I have seen some of the minis. IMO they are awful and the bases simple ruin the model. Plus as already stated they are unpainted and need some assembly. If I ever discover that the rules (once published) are any good I will be using my WoTC models. On a separate note, I love Cruel Seas and bought and assembled Black Seas too(not played)
