Mingaladon Airfield
Flying Tigers Scenario 9
Background: Friday morning, January 23, 1942 Mingaladon, Burma
Major Yasuo Makino's 50th Sentai led a morning raid on the Mingaladon air base in Rangoon on January 23, 1942. Mingaladon that Friday was defended by a mixed bag of fighters: only a handful of Tomahawks, plus half a dozen Buffaloes. Three Hurricanes were also there that morning, having finished their 4,000-mile journey from North Africa, and Squadron Leader C.A.C Stone--“Bunny” to his pilots--commandeered them for the 17th Squadron. The AVG 2nd Pursuit Squadron ("The Panda Bears") aces David Lee "Tex" Hill (11.25 victories) and Frank Lawlor (8.50 victories) led Tomahawks plus Hurricanes (from 17 Squadron) against the air raid.
Victory Conditions
The American player wins if he achieves more victory points than opponent.
The Japanese player wins if he achieves more victory points than opponent.
Map:
Dog-1 with Dog-1 lower right hand corner, Baker-2 the same way, and Fox-2 with Fox-2 upper left hand corner
Map Setup Notes:
1. Town on Baker-2 is the Mingaladon airfield. The road is the Thailand Border.
2. Town on Dog-1 is Rangoon. The road is the Burma Road.
3. Clouds: Heavy over the airfield.
4. Sun: None
SCENARIO RULES
1. The Hurricanes have just arrived in Burma. They have not had time to remove their external fuel tanks. Planes have limited performance.
a. Drop tanks cause all maneuvers to be done at one level poorer (e.g. blue square maneuvers become green shield maneuvers while the air unit is still carrying drop tanks; tan maneuvers remain unchanged.)
b. The defense factor of an air unit with drop tanks is also decreased by one. Fuel tank hits automatically cause a fire, which remains even if the auxiliary tanks are released.
2. One P-40C (Lawlor) attacks out of a friendly cloudbank.

Flying Tigers Scenario 9a
Background: Friday afternoon January 23, 1942 Mingaladon, Burma
Ki-30 bombers of the 31st Sentai escorted by Ki-27s of the 77th Sentai struck Rangoon several hours after the morning encounter. Major Hiroshi Yoshioka's 77th Sentai led the afternoon raid on the Mingaladon air base in Rangoon on January 23, 1942. This time, nine Tomahawks and three Buffaloes of RAF 67 squadron had been scrambled to intercept Japanese reconnaissance aircraft and were the first to encounter the “Nates”. The Japanese fighters broke out of heavy cloud cover and attacked the Buffaloes around noon. The Japanese formation consisted of twelve Anns. Heavy rain over Raheng had caused them to miss connections with escorts, so Major Yoshioka’s pilots were far behind the Anns.
Victory Conditions
The American player wins if he achieves more victory points than opponent.
The Japanese player wins if he achieves more victory points than opponent.

One Hurricane was damaged so badly it was rendered unserviceable and one P-40 was forced down. Two Ki-27s were lost according to Japanese sources. Victory claims on both sides were inflated. 50th Sentai pilots claimed two P-40s and one probable, one Buffalo and one “Spitfire” Hurricane.
