The Bombing of Darwin
Background: 19th February 1942
Darwin was attacked by aircraft flying from aircraft carriers. The main force involved in the raid was the 1st Carrier Air Fleet which was commanded by Vice-Admiral Chūichi Nagumo. This force comprised the aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Hiryū, and Sōryū and a powerful force of escorting surface ships. The main objective of their crews was attacking ships and port facilities in Darwin Harbor. Their aircraft comprised 81 Nakajima B5N ("Kate") light bombers, 71 Aichi D3A ("Val") dive bombers, and an escort of 36 Mitsubishi A6M ("Zero") fighters.
Victory Conditions
The American player wins if he survives at turn 6.
The Japanese player wins if he bombs the harbor.
Map: Baker 4 (Town is the harbor)
Map Setup Notes:
1. Set the A6M2 at altitude 5 (Flying cover)
2. Set the Bombers at Altitude 3
3. Set the P-40s at attitude 4 at speed 3.
4. All Japanese aircraft are eligible to carry bombs.
TURNS: 6
American: 33d Pursuit Squadron Japanese:1st Carrier Air Fleet
2 P-40C 6 A6M2
4 D3A
4 B5N
Aftermath:
Having thus destroyed the American interceptors in the first strike, the enemy returned two hours later with another and equally large formation which carried through its bombing runs virtually without opposition. RAAF facilities and the commercial airport had been badly hit. Even more serious was the damage done to shipping and harbor facilities. Three American ships--the destroyer Peary, the transport Meigs, and the merchantman Mauna Loa--and as many other Allied vessels had been sunk. Eight more vessels sustained serious damage. Wharves and jetties were a jumble of wreckage, the harbor was filled with debris; months would be required to restore what it had taken only a few hours to destroy.
