My first Scenario. Would love feedback, P-40’s vs. Vals (7-Dec-41)
Background: On December 7, 1941, many US aircraft were destroyed on the ground. Included in the few that did get airborne were two P-40's that were aloft in time to intercept the Japanese second wave. The two P-40's tangled with four vics (twelve) Vals on their way in. Historically, they shot down 6 Vals. Can you do the same?
Map: Blue sky
Aircraft: USAAC = 2x P-40 47th Pursuit Squadron
IJN = 12x D3A Vals
Setup: Set the Vals up in four Vics at altitude 2 at speed 2. Set the P-40s at attitude 4 at speed 3.
Game Length: 20 turns
Special Rules:
Americans
1. Turn two: out of ammo. Return to airfield to rearm.
2. Turn three: Re-engage. Take off directly towards the bombers.
3. Taylor performs a chandelle.
Additional Rules: P-40 pilots as average (Kenneth A. Taylor, George S. Welch)
Vals are 8 regular, 4 green (1 green to each vic), the Japanese are second wave bomber pilots.
Aftermath:
Both pilots headed back to Haleiwa. After landing and driving back to Wheeler, Taylor and Welch passed by their squadron commander, Major Gordon H. Austin, who noticed that they were wearing their tuxedo attire. Unaware of their earlier dogfights, he shouted at the two men, saying "Get back to Haleiwa! You know there's a war on?" The two pilots explained what they had done, and the commander thanked them.
