This is a custom card being designed for my Strike North Campaign Scenario which I will be GMing during the upcoming MaizeCon in Waterloo, IA happening in October 2018. There are plenty of card designs already out there by such esteemed individuals as Sharpe, Thor711 and ObstbfEgon. I'm using them as starting points for my own versions. Some have been left entirely intact and others I have modified to my own purposes.
Looking for feedback. What do you think? Is it balanced in terms of cost? Any concerns or questions?
Once I have enough comments / feedback giving approval I will produce the unit card and post it here.
Madsen m/22 LMG
Nationality: Norway
Soldier
Year available: 1940
Cost: 4
Speed: 1
Defense: 4/4
AI: 8/7/-
AV: 2/2/-
Covering Fire - Soldiers attacked by this unit can’t make defensive fire attacks this turn.
Prone to Jam - If this unit rolls any 1's during an attack, put a face up Disrupted counter on it. This counter isn't removed until the following turn’s casualty phase. (Updated 9/15/18)
Many Norwegian soldiers did not like the Madsen as it had a tendency to jam after only a few rounds, leading to it gaining the nickname “Jomfru Madsen”, Virgin Madsen. (Updated 9/15/18)
I am seriously thinking of dropping the Prone to Jam SA from this unit. So far I have used it in two separate playtest games and we keep forgetting to implement the effects of the SA when the Madsen LMG is disrupted. Would dropping that penalty SA increase the cost to 5 or should I keep it at cost 4? The French LMG (MAC 24/29 Machinegunner) is the same except that its' medium range verses soldiers is a 6 and not a 7 compared to the Norwegian Madsen LMG.
Maybe deal with the jamming kind of like the Brixia Mortar, if 1 or more 1's are rolled, place a face up Disrupted counter on it that is not removed in the Casualty Phase, it remains through the next turn & unless redisrupted, it gets removed then. Just a thought of dealing with the jamming you mention.
Perhaps reduce the cost to 3 to reflect to lower effectiveness of the SA
It's not so much the cost. It's the special ability. Whenever players use this unit, will they remember not to fire next turn if the LMG "jammed"? The idea of making it something like the Brixia mortar's SA sounds like a way to do this. Maybe reword the special ability to say this:
Prone to Jam - If this unit rolls any 1's during an attack, put a face up Disrupted counter on it. This counter isn't removed at the beginning of the next casualty phase.
Something like this is easier for both players to see and mark accordingly. The LMG can still fire next turn, but at a penalty.
I thought that would work. It is something that anyone who has played Italy & used the Brixia would be familiar with, since it is already something in the AAM game mechanics & rules/Special Abilities. Glad I could help out. You do a great job of keeping a good game/game system alive. Thanks for all you do Sgt. Fury.
New, new version 3 added to top of thread. Prone to Jam special ability has been reworded to make it clear that you wait until the next turn's casualty phase before removing the face up disruption counter.
