I was thinking of ways to compete with War at Sea minis and a race came to mind. Who wants to put the little plastic ships through their paces?
The Race Course
Following scale of the game, each turn (each move) is 10 minutes and the course is 45 sectors of 5,000 yards each, or 135 nautical miles. At speed 2 a ship would finish in just under 4 hours. But of course that's no fun. Only ships with a speed boost ability can participate (like a Fast roll or a Slow roll, High Speed Run and Sprint also could compete but those are quite predictable too). Unfortunately Chase won't work as there is no enemy to move toward.
Event 1 - The Big Oval
This is a straight-up race around the course, clockwise starting in E1. Sail your ship around the outside of the islands, one lap. The ship that makes it in the fastest time by class is the winner!
Event 2 - Biathlon
Race around the same course, shooting a target as you pass by each island. You have as many shots as you need to hit a 60% shot with your range-1 main gunnery value, regardless of your distance when you shoot it. So if you roll 15 dice at range-1, your target is 9 successes and you may shoot as soon as you are in range. If you do not hit your target, the penalty is 3 turns.
Special Rule - Ignore this Ship's Extended Range or Harassing Fire ability. For each sector beyond the Ship's printed range, roll 3 fewer attack dice when making Gunnery attacks.
Event 3 - Open Championship
Think your super dreadnought can outpace the escort destroyers of the world? Regardless of your class, everyone competes for one title as fastest ship in the fleet.
Third class is all Slow 3 ships.
Second class is all Slow 2 ships or worse.
First class is all Slow 1 ships or worse.
Super class is all ships above Speed 2 below Speed 3.
We'll take signups for a week and allow for some trash talking in the meantime, so entries will close a week from this posting. You can take multiple ships but they have to be in different classes. At the close of registration if two people chose the same ship a sister or comparable ship will be chosen to avoid complication. Choice will be based on how many ships a player has in the regatta and order of signup.
