So there's been lots of talk about what's the "best" ship from WW2.
What about the one ship or class that was key to it's nation's success?
For example, it's pretty easy to say that HMCS Uganda was Canada's most powerful. In game, it's Algonquin hands down.
But I'd say it was the Flower Class that was the most valuable to the RCN. (Can't offhand think of an individual ship that played a critical role at a critical time)
To you from failing hands we throw the torch be yours to hold it high. -In Flanders Fields. John McCrea
If you go by workhorse as the definition of most valuable it would be the Flower corvette for Canada, the Warspite for Britain for "I 've been everywhere", the type VII submarine for Germany, sentimental USA choice would be the Enterprise or the Liberty ship for the sheer number
The big ships and big guns get the glory, but it was the merchant and amphip ships that won the war. Without them the war could not have been brought to Japan, Africa, Europe. Look at Germany. They had Britain on their knees but had no way to mount an effective ground assault on Britain or to sustain one.

Yeah really good point Drittal, since playing war at sea I have hands down given the Merchant Navy more applause than any other unit as they pass by down ANZAC Parade on ANZAC Day, more than the crew of the Sydney, or the Australia banner as it passes, that's gotta say something about what I have learned about these brave ships and crews. Those guys on the Merchant ships sailing day in and day out through the most dangerous waters during war time, delivering their vital cargos to keep the whole thing rolling. Its truly amazing, with sometimes unarmed vessels with no hope of escape or being able to defend themselves. They get my vote for sure.
Its hard to pin point a single ship amongst all the ships during the war that had a "game-changing" effect on the war, it was a lot of ships and a lot of crews under the command of a lot of commanders.
For the game of War at Sea, and my favourite ship in that navy it would probably be HMS Jamaica, there is not a single battle she is not part of, the Flotilla Leader ability has arguably led to more victories than any other special ability.

If your talking the big boys and their stunning new war fare control of the seas its as Northstar said the Essex Class; But the work horse that allowed the Merchant to get were it at to go; protected the fleet from air and below the sea; and at little cost could sacrifice its being to not stop but slow the BB's and CA's till the cavalry arrived is the DD's. AND there was none better at it than the Fletcher's all 175 of them.
