I am looking for some advice on making a new map for W@S. I have already done a large 4x8 with plywood, but I was looking for something more portable. I was considering felt or some other cloth. I am sure somebody out there has done something along those lines. Any suggestions?

I don't have the links to post atm, but I know that there is a very good thread on Boardgamegeek about alternate WAS maps and how to make/where to buy them. I don't recall the name but there is an online store that offers high-quality hex maps (with hex sizes from 4-5 inches) in various sizes.
Formerly "Admiral Jacky Fisher."
"It follows then as certain as that night succeeds the day, that without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious"--George Washington
I made a 6 section map made of 30'"by 20" by 1/4" white covered foam sheets you can find at most craft shops. Taped them together so they would fold into one 30 by 20 stack; easy to store or carry that way. Got idea from old Avalon Bookcase game maps and how they fold. just paint and grid it the way you want. Mine opens to a nice 90 by 40 map
Go to a fabric store and get the sheets of rubber-vinyl. I had a 1x4" board I used to draw the sectors with a Sharpie. It can withstand drinks and pretty severe abuse. I've had mine since the game launched and its still going. Rolls up around a 1" PVC pipe. Total cost, maybe $20 for all materials, vinyl, sharpie, board, and pipe.
Plain wallpaper is good for durability, colour shades and size options. Put it on hardboard or something lighter if your looking to transport it and then pencil in the grids at whatever scale you want.
"That's right son, join the navy. Get behind a bloody big gun and knock the hell out of somebody"
"We went out, got our arses kicked, then came back again"
I went to a fabric store and had a large cut of blue fabric with an ocean type pattern. I then used a silver sharpie and a five inch hexagon to trace out the hexes. I lay it all out for large battles and fold it in half for regular battles.
There are two types of people who do not get far in life, those that can't do what they are told and those who can do nothing else.
Thanks for all the input guys. I decided to go with the foam boards. I created 4 separate panels, so the board size can be adjusted to fit the size of battle desired. In hindsight I should have applied a little more paint, but for a total cost of $12, I can always redo it. Here is a couple pics.
