I'm thinking of ordering a nice hex map suitable for AAFM. Say 3 to 4" hexes, with a span of at least 12x14 hexes or so. I found the paper maps included with the Starters look nice, but are way too small. i made my own hex map of about 15x15 but my crafts skills stink, and so the map looks crappy.
I've seen suggestions for Hotz Matz, but also warnings that they can take months to deliver.
I use the Hotz mat I once ordered for playing large W@S games. The map is nice and large, which allows for a lot of maneuvering. It is also rather bland, having no print apart from the hex pattern.
Delivery can take some time, indeed. I had to place my order twice just to get 1 map, which still took > 2 month to get delivered (in Europe).
One idea I've had is to print off some kind of geomorphic terrain tiles. Get a nice background image of land or water, mark out a pattern of 3 or 4 inch hexes, and then run off multiple copies to make tiles.
Maybe use a color photocopier or printer and glue the paper output to foam board. Then I could make as large a map as I wanted...
I bought a sea mat from cor-sec engineering- good price, arrived about 1 week after I ordered it and looks great. I am gun-shy about hotz matz given the love/hate relationship people have with them.
Update: I went to Zazzle.com and uploaded a hex map I found here on this site. I then ordered a vinyl indoor banner, 3 feet by 5 feet, for about $20 US plus shipping.
It took about 8-10 days to arrive, and I am very happy with it. The picture I uploaded was relatively low resolution, so the map is a bit blurry, but I think that it actually works well for air combat.
