To clarify "Shapeways are more brittle," let me say that Detail plastics are more brittle. These include Frosted Detail, Frosted Ultra Detail, etc. Because modelers can put more details into the Shapeways minis, they do include them on a lot of the models. These (Shapeways calls them) thin-walled surfaces are more likely to break than any piece you'd buy out of a booster. So if you drop a mini, no, it won't break into a million pieces, but you probably will snap off that cool-yet-delicate mast or crane or antenna.
Anecdote time! I was playing my buddy in his second or third game and wanted to show off some pieces so I put out my custom-painted USS Texas. Just by picking it up, he broke the crane off of one of the sides. He felt so bad about it that I had to tell him it wasn't a big deal and that I could fix it. He offered to pay for the ship and I said not to worry about it. What I didn't tell him was that he broke my favorite ship.
But that is why I quit using the detail plastics early on. If they were just for display then that would be the way to go. But for actual gameplay they are just too breakable. The WSF may have a rough surface, but it is nylon and thus flexible and durable.

One can probably pick up the smaller units on eBay at reasonable prices. Some of the larger ones can be pricey. However, even the Shapeways WSF can have issues. The masts are not always printed properly and there is less detail than the other materials, but more than W@S units, usually. I've had issues with the WSF masts and other parts breaking off, but not as easily as the other Shapeways materials. The question is how much are you willing to pay for durability? If it is a 10 year old, I would seriously consider using Shapeways for some of the larger, more expensive items. For my personal pieces, I would try to obtain the W@S units.

If I just got my NFL 1st round signing bonus I'd go official mini's rounded out by Shapeways.
On a budget with a game new to me, kids to put through school, taxes to complain about and bills to pay, I'd get the 2D topside mini's and have a fleet for a decent price.
