Graduating the Japanese naval academy in 1910 and was posted to the Cruiser Aso in 1914. Followed by diplomatic posts to the League of Nations for and naval attaché to France. Promoted to the rank of Captain in 1930 he did not gain a operational command until 1934 when he posted to the Cruiser Aoba, followed by the Chokai, then the battleship Kirishima in 1935. Ranked vice admiral in 1941, he commander of battleship division 3, for the attack on Pearl harbour, the Indian ocean raids and the Battle of Midway. Reassigned as the commander of the Japanese 8th fleet having success in the battle of Savo Island against the RAN and USN before the shifting fortunes of war meant he oversaw the Japanese defeats of the Naval Battle of Guadacanal and Battle of the Bismarck Sea for which he was reassigned to non consequential postings for the remainder of the war.
