looking back over Spruance's record, the aftermath of operation Hailstone is of note. The Iowa and New Jersey engaged a weak japanese force was escaping truk harried by carrier aircraft, but orders were given to allow the Spruance with his surface ships to engage personally.

First serving on the Battleship USS Iowa in 1907. Raymond Spruances first command was the destroyer USS Bainbridge in 1913. By the start of ww2 he flew his flag om the Heavy Cruiser USS Northampton, as part of the taskgroup centred on the USS Enterprise in the early operations in the pacific. In the lead up to the pivotal Battle of Midway, Spruance was recommended by his superior William Halsey to take his place, after the latter had fallen ill. The cruicial victory at midway is considered a turning point. Spruance would in the later stages of the war alternate with Halsey in commanding the fleet. Most notably at the battle of the phillipine Sea. Admiral Spruance is also reported to be the only 4 star admiral to engage in a surface combat action with the sinking of the Katori and Maikaze in conjunction with operation Hailstone in 1944
