One quick note about the custom rules: carrier fighters don't have to rearm for a turn and land-based aircraft IMO should only need one turn. Does this make sense?

I think you are misunderstanding the rules--all actions within the same phase are simultaneous. If my zekes had shot down both of your fighters, they would still be able to shoot back before being removed from play at the end of the air defense phase. I could be wrong but I made sure to re-read parts of the rulebook before I started playing again.

No need to re-do, just go ahead and roll attacks for the P-40 and the Wildcat.
