Commissioned shortly after the beginning of the war. HMS Kelvin's first significant taste of combat was the Texel Disaster where her formation of destroyers sailed into an undetected minefield that sank 2 destroyers and forced Kelvin to scuttle a third. Transferred to the Mediterreanen, she was part of Admiral somervilles fleet engaging italian forces at the battle of sparaventivo. Kelvin later transported Winstin Churchill to normandy on D-Day+6. To the consternation of King George and General Eisenhower
I don't know if it has room but what about a line at the end regarding her transporting VIPs to Normandy including Churchill. This event is generally what comes up in connection with Nubian. Not sure verbatim but I remember reading somewhere about this tour round the landing area and Churchill advising Nubian's captain to move closer inshore to try and encourage any hidden shore batteries to open fire!
"That's right son, join the navy. Get behind a bloody big gun and knock the hell out of somebody"
"We went out, got our arses kicked, then came back again"
I read it in a memoir at some point, likely someone who was on the bridge or officer in area. Possibly Vian's memoir who was officer in command sea area onboard Scylla and likely went with him.
The actual VIP transporting line is what comes up generally.
You've covered it with what you've added. You could flip it round:
To the consternation of King George and General Eisenhower, Kelvin later transported Winston Churchill (across?)to Normandy on D-Day+6.
Just as a PS. Churchill wanted to go on D Day itself! but the King said if you go, I go, knowing that would stop him.
"That's right son, join the navy. Get behind a bloody big gun and knock the hell out of somebody"
"We went out, got our arses kicked, then came back again"
I understand Churchill had a habit for gilding the lily as well.
