On the night of 16 April 1943, a small convoy lead by Cigno was attacked by two Royal Navy destroyers. Despite being drastically outclassed, Cigno and her sistership Cassiopeia engaged the enemy while the convoy ships slipped away. The Italians crippled the destroyer HMS Pakenham, for the loss of Cigno. The British were forced to scuttle Pakenham the next day. This encounter was a rare instance of the successful defense of an Italian convoy as the war turned against the Axis.
