This may have already been asked, but what is the difference between FDM and Resin on the XPForge 3D printed ships? Does anyone have a preference/know which one paints up better?
Ghukek did a nice job of comparing materials here: Comparison Thread
While he didn't compare FDM, it's going to be pretty similar to the grey PLA he talks about in the 2nd picture.
FDM essentially melts the plastic and then layers it on top of the previous layer. It's going to be rougher and you will need to do some clean up...look at the mast on this porter from XPForge:
The XPForge resin is cured and is able to provide high detail and smooth decks. Take a look at any of the carriers I've posted recently. You'll want resin if you're doing decals for carriers...the decal will show every flaw and imperfection of FDM. The resin, once primed, will be much easier to paint regardless of the type of ship...
Resin paints better and looks better but they are more fragile. Make sur to pad well for storage.
I haven't noticed any fragility from the XPForge resin...it's much more durable than the Smooth, Fine Detail Plastic from Shapeways. I wouldn't smack it on a table or bend it too much, but I think it's tougher like the Shapeways WSF...
Masts, cranes, and gun barrels mostly. That can be glued but there goes the paint job. FDM doesn’t have the weight. Not saying resin is bad just requires a bit more gentle treatment.

Cheers!
Grey PLA in my comparison is coming from my FDM printer. I believe XPForge is using PLA in his as well so this is basically the same.
XPForge's resin is very close to Shapeways Accura Xtreme. We are used to Shapeways fine detail plastic. This is what's brittle. The resin is actually slightly more flexible than FDM and I highly recommend it. Shapeways resin is way too expensive but XPForge's is very reasonably priced.
