After all these years, I was wondering what people are still using as a playing surface? Also wondering if anyone has any recommendations for purchasing/making a new playing surface?
Was never a big fan of the maps that came all folded up with the starter set. Unfortunately, I didn't start getting into this game until the Gale Force Nine mat had already gone out of print. They don't seem to come up for sale very often on eBay or other places. Historicalboardgaming.com still seems to have its oversized battle maps available. Some of the sites that used to sell hex mats are no longer operating. I've been debating whether to try and custom print a vinyl banner or an oversized mouse pad as a playing surface. Sorry if I missed a thread that discusses this. Wanted to start a new one since some of the sites like Hotz don't seem to be operating anymore.
I was lucky enough to get the GF9 one for a reasonable price, but I also bought a couple of hex-based ones from Hotz and, after a good commission from work, bought the two from HBG...so it just depends on the size of the game we want to play...
Unfortunate to hear all the sites we go to for War at Sea don't exist anymore. I bought my Hotz years ago. I do have some of the War at Sea maps from 2010.
I use the War at Sea Base Set maps for 100-200pt battles, Hotz for bigger ones.
If u want, maybe laminate the WOTC ones or try and make your own Hex map if u want, I know some people on here do that.
Sorry I can't be much help

This sounds pretty cool, can you post some images?
I will second that request. Available in your store?
Hope this tags you both. I have some pictures of an actual game we did with these but they are on my computer at home so I'll post them in a couple days.
They are not currently available from any of my physical retailers but the files are free for anyone with access to a 3D print. I might be able to look into making them available somewhere but I think the last time I did I didn't think they were particularly economical from Shapeways. I can talk with XPForge but I suspect it will be the same issue. They take quite a bit of time to print, which is a problem.
It is those guys but FYI they have a website as well with cheaper prices. I too was going to purchase one from them but it would take way too long. I ended up getting a neoprene mat from Amazon. It doesn’t have grids but I just drew some with a thin sharpie and works fine for me.
Someone on board game geek recommended www.deepcutstudio.com/printomat/ which prints extra large mousepad type materials. I ordered a two sided, one with hexes and one with squares. The company is in Lithuania so we will see when/if it comes. Guess I will use the original A&A maps until it comes.
