Hey guys, the old Site (Free Forums) appears to have a new owner. There is a global announcement at the top of the page stating new ownership and an upcoming announcement. Mabie we can migrate back to the old platform, who knows.

Knowing a little bit about business, if the former owner couldn't run the site for free, I would be interested to know how the new owner plans to do it. Either there is some advertising revenue or other way for income to be generated for the site to be free. One way or another, we all pay for it, directly or indirectly.

That goes without saying. Nothing is free in this world including the new forum where we are now, however, if we have to look at ads it may as well be on the old platform with 10 years worth of content.

I agree, I understand the benefit. However, I'm a little concerned about what a new owner may have in mind to keep the old forum running. Besides, ND just spend the time and energy to set things up here, not sure what the reaction would be by him and others.

I have to agree , a huge migration effort is underway by forum leadership and the community as a whole, asking everyone to abandon that would be disrespecting their effort.

What about the thousand upon thousands of threads and posts we abandoned on the old platform. They represent an unimaginable amount of work by members. You could say that was a disrespectful too, just saying.

Leaving the old platform was a decision forced on the forum by circumstance, not by arbitrary fiat (calling that disrespectful is a bit unreasonable), further to that the history and work that old platform represents are efforts that happened organically over years, where the migration has been herculean in a matter of weeks.
Well, I think we stay here, and just use the old site as a repository of old knowledge, per se. When old members pop back in... and they will... we can direct them here.

Assuming it remains active and "free". If the new owners change the business model it's unlikely to be cost effective to maintain.
I don't think there is a "safe" choice. This host could go down too. Nothing has much permanence on the Internet. I like the improved interface on the new site, but I definitely hate to see the amount of information we are going to lose. I have moved just a few threads for the Deck E card development project (among other things) and it is a horrendously tedious and time consuming task just to move one thread! I think we can save the most important and often-used stuff (maybe), but we will lose a ton of "archival" information. The previous card development sub-forums and threads are definitely going to be lost. There is just no way those are going to be saved. Although maybe that is a good thing!
Anyway, I suspect we will stay here now that we have got the ball rolling, but I could go either direction. If it won't cost us anything I would definitely like to see the old site kept functioning just for the information stored. At least for awhile. It would give us more time to understand what information we would like to save and get it moved. We are not going to catch it all in two months.

Also, I should be able to migrate most if not all of the scenarios. I'm doing 1 a day until the school year ends. When it does at the end of May, I should be able to spend several hours per day moving stuff. If nothing else, I think I had them all printed out anyway. I could slowly but surely get them all up.
