Over the past month, in collaboration with Ghukek’s Miniatures & XP Forge, I have been creating 1-1800 scale deck decals. Most of the designs are now complete. Over the weekend I took a break from digital design to get some painting therapy in. It was long overdue. These are XP Forge FDM prints wearing Pearl Harbor decks. They were fun, fast & easy to paint up! Have to admit that I'm partial to the resin prints. For the extra couple $, I like the weight and smooth surfaces of the resin. Have a bunch more IJN resin prints on the way. Going to do them in Midway and some camo decks. In fact I have decided to pause all digital design work over the holiday break to get some more paint therapy in:-)
First off, those are awesome! Second, I think I'm going to cry. Third, I'm already on your website trying to figure out what I'm going to order. Fourth, I'm going to XPForge to order some IJN carriers. Fifth, I'm going to have to hide these purchases from my wife.
One question, are your Essex class decals fit specifically to the unit? Is there some variation based on long hull vs. short hull?

Grg,
She is going to find out...They always find out...Sorry about that brother...
As for the Essex, yes the hull variations do make a difference. The decals are historically aligned. Example: CV10 Yorktown was a short hull so the decal is available only in short hull length. I know this gets confusing. Especially since the short hull ships actually had longer decks. To help mitigate this confusion, In the description I have designated if the decal is a short or long hull ship. Hoping that helps mitigate some of the confusion. XP Forge also designates if you want a short or long version. He also has early-war & late-war versions They do not have an impact on the deck decal. The decal will fit correctly on either early or late war prints. Hope that helps?
Very nice! That should speed up carrier painting a lot.
Amazingly so! Not including dry time between coats, it took about an hour to do all 4 CVs! Speed painting at it's best So much faster and easier than 1-2400. I can also actually see what I'm working on:-)
Well, I already had one of Ghukek's long hull Essex class carriers sitting here and I went ahead and ordered Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu and your corresponding Hancock and IJN Midway decals to check this out.

I'm going to have to do the same, these decks look amazing.

I went through these same 5 steps, almost in the same order (my wife found out already) These decals look awesome - I just filled out my Japanese light carrier fleet!

They always find out... Your decals will be out in Mondays Post Hap!
Dan, sorry, missed that. When you say "Once decal has set and dried, apply topcoat sealer lacquerer.", do you mean an acrylic varnish? If not, can you give an example?

Grg,
Thank you for the question. I will update the the decal FAQs to better explain. Let start with sealer types. As you note there is more than 1 type. I will break them into 2 groups. Oil and acrylic based clear coat sealers. When painting / decaling any mini, pick one of the two and stay with that one throughout the entire process. Note: you can use an oil based sealer over an acrylic (not recommend as it may cause silvering / milk hazing) you do not want to use acrylic over an oil based clear coat.
Now that you have fully painted, washed, and decaled your mini, you need to protect the paint and decal. You want to apply a final clear seal coat (oil or acrylic) over the entire mini. Think of that final clear seal coat like wax on a car finish. Or better yet, a forcefield between you fingers and the paint / decals. Without a protective final coat, your decal is vulnerable to staining. Oh, lets say... like that time the cat spilled the cup of coffee on the table and across the fleet... If the decals are top coated they will not stain. 2nd greatest evil in the world cats are. But I digress... That final coat also has an additional bonus of helping the decal adhere to the mini.
Since you read the "Why do I need to use gloss coat?" tab you know that setting solution thermally bonds the decal matric to the under gloss coat. When you apply your final seal coat (I usually finish all my naval minis in flat clear coat) that coat chemically adheres to the previous gloss coat. You have now suspended the decal between two layers of clear protective sealer.
