I know lots of people proxy the vehicles and guns for AAM, but does anyone proxy for infantry? I've noticed it's usually expensive to try and buy just AAM infantry on eBay and/or you can only buy them in lots with various vehicles, as well (not that there's anything wrong with that, but when you just want infantry...). I've noticed the soft plastic infantry from Battlefront for Flames of War is, essentially, pretty inexpensive in comparison. There is a hobby shop going out of business near me. I stopped in (masked up) and found out he was selling his FoW for 50% off. I went ahead and bought a platoon of KV-1s, a British starter/battle kit with 9 various tanks, a Bren and 4 25 pdr guns, and 2 Russian and 1 German platoons of soldiers. Add in a couple boxes of Colours of War paint kits, a new hobby knife and sprue clippers and I still barely spent $100.
Has anyone done proxying with infantry? It's not like I'm going to tournaments or anything, so it probably doesn't matter, but I thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone has input. I'm checking the platoons for weapons/poses that are similar to those of AAM units and was thinking I would paint them for proxies (although I would paint them in uniform colors...not the hodge-podge that the AAM units seem to have...).
This kind of goes to my point. The cheapest infantry unit at Mini Market is the mortar at $1.25. Even the Greek guys are $1.50. Buying that Flames of War German rifle platoon at $9 makes it around $0.21 per figure and I know they have actual German weapons and clothes (although at this scale it really doesn't matter that much, I suppose). Eventually, I'll probably be swearing because I'm painting 15mm infantry, but it seems like a better deal right now.
I just looked at that link to Miniature Market & suffered a bit of sticker shock. I had no idea that the small planes had increased in price as much as I saw & the soldier pieces seemed a bit pricey as well. I am glad I built up my air forces when people were unloading the small planes for decent prices & got the soldiers & artillery units at very good prices. At those prices, it is almost cost prohibitive to try to build a decent collection these days with original WotC pieces.
Don’t look at any heavy cruisers, carriers, or battleships on eBay.
I am strictly a land gamer....i have seen some of the asking prices for WAS pieces in the Marketplace here....who would have ever guessed our "Plasticrack" would be so valuable...

This is why I was asking if anyone else proxies infantry, but I suppose it applies to the aircraft, as well. I bought some Blood Red Skies aircraft to proxy for the AAM ones. Those haven't even been primed yet...so it could take a while.
I don't feel like I need to collect all of the AAM units (thankfully, since I'm not that wealthy), but it would be nice to get a nice core of infantry to go along with my AFVs I'm painting up.
Use a piece of string or something else narrow and flat to point to a sector if it can’t fit. Generally I try to put aircraft away from other units anyway.
I am happy with the smaller planes myself. I don't need the bigger ones since the small ones work must fine, easier to store & I don't play the air game either. If it ain't broke, no need to fix it...
As to your original question, if I need to proxy infantry, I just use ones from another country, Axis for Axis or Allied for Allied but do use the appropriate card for the type.
Our group (curtm1911 knows this) uses Plastic Soldier Co. for proxy units. The Infantry come usually 9 to a pose with 6 or 7 different poses. The Heavy Weapons sets are great with light & heavy mortars, light & heavy MGs and other goodies depending on nationality. Well worth the investment if you plan on proxying many units.
