I'm going to try and chronicle my WiP for my models I'll be using for AAM.
First post is to show the USSR and German units.
This lot of Russian units is starting off with a lighter green (Army Painter). I've got some more T-34/85s that will use a slightly darker shade (Vallejo) just for some diversity.
This German lot will be early war panzer grey (Army Painter). I've got two other groups; one will go the light tan route for DAK and the other will go with the dark yellow with camo.
This shot is one of many new standoffs these armies will have:
Broke out the airbrush for these and really struggled to get it right (never really did). Started off with much too little flow and finished with much too much air flow. Going to need more practice. Not horrible for the first time in probably two years, though...
Going left to right:
The left-most column are PLA 3D-printed units I bought off eBay. Won't buy them again. The wheels and tracks are just not printed well; took forever to get them cleaned up and I'm still not happy. The next column to the right are PLA 3D-printed units I bought off Etsy. I *may* buy more of them. Actually came pretty well, with not a lot of garbage around the wheels and tracks, but still not nearly as nice as Plastic Soldier Company, Zvezda or FoW. Still waiting for the resin ones I ordered from Etsy... Finally, the column to the far right are a JagdTiger from Zvezda and the rest are from Flames of War.
Finally found my model paints, so I'll be moving forward with the Soviet units soon.
OK, 2nd highlight is done. Again, super hard to see in the pic, but I'm really happy with it. I'm trying to decide if I want to do a last highlight painted on the corners & hard edges. I know sometimes the varnish will cover some of the less distinct highlights. Will think on that.
I'm not digging the PSC T-34/85s. They're just smaller enough to notice that they're smaller than the FoW ones. Plus, the tracks have to be assembled. Oh well, I won't be throwing them out or anything...
The wheels are done enough for me, but I need to work on the tracks. I'm not a "chipping" or "mud" guy and I like my tanks looking like they just rolled off the factory floor and purty, but I do like the tracks looking a little rusty and a bit more metallic. That and picking out some of the few details the Soviets didn't simply paint green and then it's on to decals!
OK, I'm pretty happy where things are at. I've picked out some details and painted those and got the tracks metallicized and a little rusty. Just need to get the decals on and then I'm going to work on some white stripes for the turrets on the IS-2s.
Final WiP shots. Decided against the white stripes on my IS-2s; next batch. The only thing left is to paint my T34 commander...which will probably wait. If I have time tomorrow, I'll start gloss coating; on Friday it'll be the matte varnish. Thanks for following along!
