Arizona became a U.S. state on February 14, 1912. Arizona was the 48th state admitted to the U.S. and the last of the contiguous states to be admitted.
The first USS Arizona was an iron-hulled, side-wheel merchant steamship. Seized by the Confederate States of America in 1862 during the American Civil War, she was captured later the same year by the United States Navy. On the evening of 27 February 1865 while underway from South West Pass to New Orleans, 38 miles (61 km) below New Orleans, a fire broke out in the engineer's after storeroom and spread very rapidly. Brown ordered the magazine flooded and, when no possibility of saving the ship remained, ordered the crew to the boats. Some leaped overboard and swam to shore. The vessel drifted to the west bank of the river, grounded, and burned until she exploded 35 minutes past midnight. Out of a crew of 98 on board four were missing.
The second USS Arizona started out as USS Neshaminy was a large and powerful 3,850-ton screw frigate with a length of 335 feet that was under construction at the Philadelphia Navy Yard when she was surveyed by Navy officials who found her construction work to be poor. Construction was halted by the Navy, which eventually sold her for scrap.
Neshaminy, a screw frigate built by the United States Navy during 1863–65 and launched 5 October 1865 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, was a wooden ship of the first rate. She had two horizontal direct-acting engines of forty-eight-inch stroke and eight Martin boilers. Her machinery was built by the Etna Iron Works of New York. The steamer was assigned a battery of two 100–pounder Parrott rifles, one 6–pounder rifle, ten 8-inch smoothbores, and four howitzers, but the battery was never mounted.
From 1866 through 1868 Neshaminy was at the New York Navy Yard for installation of her engines. In 1869 she was laid up in ordinary at that yard. Her name was changed to Arizona 15 May 1869, and to Nevada 12 August 1869.
In 1869 she was examined by a board which found her hull so twisted and her construction so poor that it was decided not to finish her.

Named in honor of the 48th state's recent admission into the union, the ship was the second and last of the Pennsylvania class of "super-dreadnought" battleships. Arizona was hit by Japanese torpedo bombers during the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. After one of their bombs detonated in a magazine, she exploded violently and sank, with the loss of 1,177 officers and crewmen.
The fourth USS Arizona (SSN-803), a Block 5 Virginia-class submarine, will be the fourth United States Navy vessel named for the state of Arizona. Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly announced the name on 24 December 2019, in a press release. Arizona was authorized for construction on 2 December 2019. At 460 ft (140 m), Arizona will be the second-largest US submarine, behind only the Ohio-class.

SS Grand Canyon State (T-ACS-3) is a crane ship in ready reserve for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the state of Arizona, which is also known as the Grand Canyon State. Grand Canyon State was laid down on 20 March 1964, as the combination breakbulk-container ship SS President Polk, ON 500484, IMO 6510899, a Maritime Administration type (C4-S-1aq) hull under MARAD contract (MA 164). Built by National Steel and Shipbuilding, San Diego, CA, hull no. 338, she was launched on 23 January 1965, and delivered to MARAD on 4 November 1965, for service with American President Lines. She was converted to a MARAD type (C6-S-1qc) container ship, in 1973, and continued to be operated by APL until delivered to the Maritime Administration in 1982 for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF). In 1985-1987 she was converted to a type (C6-S-MA1qd) Crane Ship by Dillingham Corporation, San Francisco, CA. She was placed in service as SS Grand Canyon State (ACS-3) 27 October 1987, assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Ready Reserve Force, (RRF). The Grand Canyon State is assigned to the Maritime Propositioning Squadron Three and is maintained in a 5-day readiness status (ROS-5).
The SS Arizona was a record breaking British passenger liner that was the first of the Guion Line's Atlantic Greyhounds on the Liverpool-Queenstown-New York route.[1] One nautical historian called Arizona "a souped up transatlantic hot rod." Entering service in 1879, she was the prototype for Atlantic express liners until the Inman Line introduced its twin screw City of New York in 1889. The Arizona type liner is generally considered as unsuccessful because too much was sacrificed for speed.[3] Laid up in 1894 when Guion stopped sailings, Arizona was sold four years later and briefly employed in the Pacific until she was acquired by the US Government for service in the Spanish–American War. As the U.S. Navy's Hancock she continued trooping through W.W.I. and was finally scrapped in 1926.
