So earlier this year I made the mistake of buying a SLA resin printer. My intent was to start churning out creatures for a few tabletop campaigns I was in. But soon afterwards I learned a few things. One I can't paint worth a darn. And two, Covid ended face to face sessions. So rather than letting my printer sit there collecting dust, I decided to look into printing my naval designs. Believe it or not, I don't actually have physical prints of about 2/3 of my designs. They came out looking pretty good. Good enough to wonder if anyone would be interested in buying them directly from me rather than ordering them through Shapeways.
By no means do I intend to replace Shapeways, there is no way I could keep up with demand. But if I limited my sales to Forumini members and focus on ships I made for the team decks, I think I can provide a pretty well detailed (much better that WSF), rather sturdy (better that the ultra detailed) and inexpensive (cheaper than both). Right now I am thinking about $6-7 per unit. (DDs and Subs will be sold in pairs). Ships over 125mm (225m in real life) will cost a bit more since I can not print them flat on the plate. So they may be in the $10 range. I have yet to constantly print these larger ships satisfactorily.
I have started printing some of my designs from the recent Team Decks. Below are a few examples. I wanted to ask everyone, would you be interested in purchasing any prints like these? And if so, which of my designs would you want? Some of my older sculpts, like the Ranger and Penelope are a mess. I knew next to nothing about 3d design when I made them and remain surprised to this day they they ever successfully printed. Those may take some time to fix and make printable.
Actually, I made two mistakes. I bought an airbrush along with the 3d printer. So I was also considering offering a to put a base coat on the sculpt that don't want to paint them but still have a bit of color on the table. I would offer a few color options.
Once I get a few more examples printer, I will start a thread in the market place to list what I have ready to sell.
Here is the link to the page that lists all the miniatures done to go along with the team decks.
