I’m sorry guys, I’m brand new to this game and I have hunted through the rule book twice to try to find this.
Is there any limit on the number of aircraft in a square? Is there any limit on the number of aircraft attacking a given square or ship? Can you have 2 carriers (ship limit is two) with a total of 8 aircraft in the same square?
P.S. if you have time. I gather that the USS Johnston of Leyte Gulf game was never made by Wizards of the Coast. Has anyone created it?
A common misconception is that planes can stay on carriers, and they cannot. You have to observe the 4 aircraft per sector rule regardless of if there is a carrier there or not.
Maximum amount I believe in 100 point fleet battle is 4 friendly aircraft. Major battles (300 or more) allow for 5 aircraft.
Its a maximum of 4 aircraft per side in 100-400 point battles. The stacking limits in 500+ point battles go up to 3 ships, 1 sub, and 5 aircraft per side.

There are some situations where they can stay on deck. Rearming aircraft in a Long Range game or aircraft subject to Poor Facilities DO remain on the carrier deck and can be sunk with the carrier. Otherwise, you're absolutely right - its clearly stated in the rule book.
Also, for the original poster, you obviously can exceed the stacking limit in the air return phase for planes returning to carrier decks. For example, you could have two CAP3 carriers in the same sector with six planes on them at the end/beginning of the turn.
One other random aside that has been costing me planes a lot lately - Sea Basing. Sea Based planes must be placed every turn. They can not be sent to the Land Airbase and they can't stay on the ground/island. Doesn't seem like such a big deal until a Sea Based bomber with no escort gets jumped by a fighter.
For anyone interested, here the old WOTC clarifications. Lots of useful tidbits in there...
