After getting back in the game after some years away, the fleet is now coming together (thanks boomerbill, stalker6, and Encore). So far I've assembled two 100 point US fleets - one focused on air power, another concentrating firepower in a marquee unit:
Fleet 1: USS Montpelier (17, Cruiser) USS Princeton (16, Carrier) SBD Dauntless (13, Aircraft - Dive Bomber) F4F Wildcat (7, Aircraft - Fighter) TBF-1 Avenger (11, Aircraft - Torpedo Bomber) USS San Diego (11, Cruiser) USS Taylor (9, Destroyer) USS Kidd (8, Destroyer) USS S-37 (8, Submarine) (Thinking that Avenger and Wildcat go on the carrier, so that there's a fighter escort every turn even if one of the bombers is rearming)
Fleet 2:**edited**
USS North Carolina (58, Battleship) USS Guadalcanal (13, Carrier) F4F Wildcat (7, Aircraft - Fighter) USS Phoenix (12, Cruiser) USS Kidd (8, Destroyer) **per Stealth 7's suggestion, now with a Hellcat to help take the sting away from enemy with more aircraft**
Which fleet would you put forward? Of course, one answer is - play a 200 point game! But assuming a 100 point match, which presents the stronger option in your opinion? Fleet 1 has a breadth of air power (fighter, torpedo bomber, dive bomber) and almost twice the units, but none alone packs the punch. In some limited play testing I've found that a marquee unit (like North Carolina) ends up as the last man standing, but having several units with torpedo attacks can rack up the hull points on that marquee unit.
I prefer fleet 2, with one change. Replace the Devastator with a Wildcat to provide a bit of extra AA. The Devastator is (historically correct) a horrible aircraft, and will almost always get aborted or shot down. The NC will provide a solid punch for your fleet, and the Wildcat will help your defense against a carrier force.
Fascinating - with Guadalcanal's one aircraft, I assumed I should go for something with an offensive punch (even if it's not a Devastator). But a Hellcat helps neutralize the aircraft on the other side, giving Fleet 2 more air parity with a more air-heavy fleet (and keeping those pesky torpedo bombers away from NC).
Yeah. Also if you keep the Guadalcanal with North Carolina for the first turn or so, the Wildcat will throw 8 AA over the pair using Defend the Flattop.
Of course, you don't want to get the carrier into gun range of your opponent if possible.
As for the year, I didn't have one in mind when I set up the fleets but it looks like both US fleets were 1943 (because of the Kidd) and the IJN opponent was 1944 (because of the Jill). Of course, the IJN fleet was carrier-centric, so for a true control variable one would need to play test with an IJN fleet centered on a battleship as well!
