Busted out the ships and rediscovered this great game with my son. Playing a Guadalcanal themed game with troop landings etc. 3 x 200 point games, air, night
Rediscovering this great game with my son. Having a blast with a Guadalcanal themed campaign. Three 200 point games with the mission to land troops- day, night, day with storms. 4th game will include all survivors and resolve the infantry battle. Yanks won the first day, landed all the troopers, and sunk all the enemy transports. Heavy losses on both sides. My son is kicking my butt in the second game, and landed all his troops. The New York is down, with the Oklahoma and Texas hanging on! Might have to run what's left off the table.

So, today, Italy faced off against France in the Med in the first morning of their short war in 1940. Firehouse and I played by phone, one of several A&A games (AAM, AAAF, WAS) that we have played by phone during the pandemic. Firehouse helmed the convoy of Gloire, Lamotte-Piquet, Milan x2, Le Terrible x2 and four generic cargo ships, on their way to the Advance Naval Base in Corsica. I helmed the Italians, including the Bolzano; Guiseppe Garibaldi; Camicia Nere; Ascari x2; Motor Torpedo Boat x2; Ambra; and Leonardo Da Vinci. No air mission because it was dawn, with the exception of the Scoutplane Attack SA for Lamotte-Piquet, which successfully eliminated one Motor Torpedo Boat on the first turn. The cargo ships headed for Corsica with only two destroyers escorting them, while the rest of the French fleet turned east to meet the Regia Marina head-on. The Italians divided their fleet into two sections: an Ascari and the Bolzano to meet the French guns and the Garibaldi, the Camicia Nere, the other Ascari, the subs and the remaining MTB heading for the cargo ships. The Ascari laid smoke around the Bolzano, which fired out of the smoke to sink one Le Terrible and cripple the other. The Garibaldi fired at long range at a Milan, crippling it and using its SA Drive Off to send the crippled Milan back one sector. Successful concealment rolls saved the Garibaldi from the surface gunnery, although it took a point of damage, but the Lamotte-Piquet's torpedoes sank it. And while the Ascari fought off several attacks, it, too, was lost. The French withdrew their crippled destroyers and brought the undamaged destroyer to the forefront, where it damaged the other Ascari and sank the remaining MTB. Neither MTB got close enough to a target to launch torpedoes. Although the Leonardo da Vinci sank one of the cargo vessels (victory points were doubled for the cargo ships), the French needed 44 points to win, and exceeded that easily.
It was a first time playing this scenario, which I designed. I think I would run this one again with more Italian MTBs, and fewer Italian "big" guns. On an earlier playtest, I noted that the MTBs were vulnerable to strafing, so I set the event early enough in the day that air missions were unlikely. I had forgotten that the Lamotte-Piquet had the SA Scoutplane Attack, and the MTB, predictably, went down easily. Sorry, but no photos. I was so engrossed in the game, that I forgot about photos! Next time.
Those who don't remember their history are bound to do something or other...
