Anyone seen the new Midway movie? I saw it last Thursday 11-7. It was better than I thought it would be. No dramatic love story like the Pearl Harbor movie. The battle scenes were over done but fun to watch. It did add some elements that were missing in the previous Midway Movie. I like how it added John Ford and the Nautilus. I wish it spent more time on Coral Sea and the drama of the Yorktown. The film was mainly focused on the Enterprise and its flight crew. I would recommend it and hope that it does well in the theaters. I would love to see more films of this formula where the typical melodrama takes a backseat to portraying the strategy, tactics, and battle events. Go see the movie and let me know what you think?
There are two types of people who do not get far in life, those that can't do what they are told and those who can do nothing else.
We took the boys and they enjoyed the movie very much. They kept leaning over and asking me is this how it happened, I had to keep telling them just sit back and watch. We can talk about it after the movie. Thought they did a good job, as you say, keeping the melodrama in the backseat, just enough to keep character development but not enough to bore you with an over the top love triangle story **cough**cough** Pearl Harbor **cough**cough**
I remember seeing all the YouTube comments about how this is just like Michael's Bay Pearl Harbor and not worth watching. But this weekend I'll give it a go with a friend.

And, how was it?

I saw last Saturday. I like the random annotates in history. How US Naval Intelligence figured out Midway was the Big Operation, the dud Mark 14 torpedoes, USS Yorktown's speedy repairs. The CGI you really notice it at times. They showed both perspectives of the battle which is also good.
There is no love triangle, it's about the dive bomber pilots and how they reacted to Pearl Harbor being bombed, training new aircrews, dealing with loss of personnel.
There are no Wildcat vs Zero battles which is disappointing.
Definitely a movie I will buy.

I thought it was pretty good overall. There are a billion story lines it could have followed or showcased but it did well with its focus. There were a few dud moments of dialog, a few dud moments of failed action scenes but overall I'm quite happy with it.
Oddly, te special effects were nowhere near as good as Tora Tora Tora's. Maybe it was an effect they were going for.

Definitely better than Pearl Harbor in my opinion. The dialog was a bit cheesy, but I think they got the main details covered very well for a movie. They couldn't cover everything, but they hit the highlights and followed a fairly coherent story. I liked it better than the original. Charlton Heston played a sort of "blend" of multiple real characters that really didn't work for me. I agree the CGI was a bit off-putting, but a blast to watch at the same time. It looked more like a (relatively high quality) video game. But the models and action were accurate for the most part. The decks of the Japanese carriers only had a few fighters spotted on them at the time of the bombing, so the writers definitely read "Shattered Sword." I liked that they got the emergency Pearl Harbor camouflage on the B-17s at Midway correct as well. There were a few errors or compromises for budget (the sinking Lexington you see for only a second or two was a Yorktown class carrier), but nothing horrible IMO.
Christopher Nolan said he didn't use much CGI on the movie Dunkerque because it just doesn't look right with WWII movies. The "uncanny valley" is too strong. However, I would argue the movie would have benefited from just a little CGI in places to give a better impression of scale. And Midway would probably have benefited from a little more use of real physical sets in places. Nit picky though. I intend to buy a copy. It is a "guilty pleasure" to watch for me.

Midway was certainly not a perfect movie, but then, my guess is it could have benefited greatly from a bigger budget, particularly in the CGI. Not exactly working with a Marvel, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars scale production. CGI wasn't horrible...better than Enterprise 360 for example...but not to the truly high end that Hollywood has proven itself capable of these day. Acting was at times a bit over the top, but honestly, some of my favorite old WWII movies from the 50s, 60s, and 70s had their fair share a sappy cheese. My biggest complain is probably the speedy pace of the film. Felt like a 3.5 hour film jammed into just over 2 hours. Lots of detail, and lots of things gotten very right, but it came at a meteoric pace. Maybe we'll get blessed by a Directors Cut that allows for a breath here and there. But either way, a movie I'll buy and add to the routine watch list.

I thought it was alright. But I also feel they tried to cover way too much and ended up glossing over details and having characters explain the plot too often.
I think it would have been a much better idea to focus on Coral Sea and Midway instead of including Pearl, the Dolittle Raid and the attack on the Marshall Islands. Yorktown was a total afterthought but it's presence at the battle was not only a miracle of the human spirit, but it was a key part of the victory

Those two things bugged me a bit. Trying to cram so much in a two hour movie. And I wish they also showed a POV from USS Hornet and Yorktown.
Still wish they showed the I-168 attack.

I enjoyed the movie. It did try to cover too much, and some of the casting didn’t work for me (though some was surprisingly good). Had it been titled “Enterprise” or some such it would have been a more accurate description. Or maybe “Galloping Ghost”?

I liked it, keeping in mind what it was and who the target audience was. Of course we here would love a deep dive mini series but at least it wasn't Bay's PH. Glaring omission of Dusty Kleiss, but from what I've read he wasn't a fan of the spotlight in life and I'm sure his family honored that in his death. Seems like the production team would have at least tried to include him, but I'm only guessing.
Also my inner ALIENS fan loved seeing Mark Rolston (Private Drake) as Admiral King.
I liked it! It’s fun watching history on the screen. But I think an informed viewing requires the Battle 360 series or some reading of the authoritative books. Otherwise I think it is the busy whirlwind you describe. A movie can cover a lot of ground and not feel crammed but this one didn’t do that. Fun popcorn flick though, and enough drama to feel/identify with the characters.
