Curious what some of you have multiples of and how many. What is a good number for each type? What are the most important units to have multiples of? Do you consider sister ships important to have?
Currently I'm working toward having 3 of each type of aircraft and submarines. Wondering about destroyers or even cruisers.
I apologize if this question is answered somewhere on here. I used the search tool and turned up nothing.
I love this question when i first started to collect it drove me nuts than almost bankrupt;; LOL
I divided my units into to two groups it was easy back than because you could buy by the case and things got crazy,
you never knew how many of each you'd get.
The first group was my collectibles mostly to be just looked at;;
Two of each Rare; Four of each common / uncommon; eight to ten of each plane common;
Where did this numbers come from; seem right to have a rare spare some extra commons and uncommon's and enough planes to fill the carriers and airfields.
With all the extras from the case buys i started to paint and base; so i decided on a collection i could take to conventions, create scenarios
and not much care if something went missing. This is where i had to get a second job!!!!
In the end like most of us nuts here you wind up with about two thousand units;; happy hunting
This is what I originally collected to have a good "game" set.
2X of each rare
3X of each uncommon ship
6X of each uncommon aircraft
7X of each common (aircraft, ship, and sub)
However, with the common ships and subs I would max out at one more than the historical ship limit.
You should be able to play even large fleet engagements with this. Our club allows proxies so on those rare occasions you need an 18 destroyer swarm of the same ship (USS Johnston mnnorthstars?) we just add other minis.
Of course, I am far beyond this now. Therapy turned out to be an additional waste of money. I should have used that money to buy more minis!

1 of each rare 1=2 uncommons 2-3 commons.... planes vary as many as 7 of some types... I am blessed that my group is still playing the game. We play alot of "Gray" navy now.. mixing ships and nations... and are always trying campaign type settings ( not all have been a great hit, but lots of fun).
I like to play with class limits, and have generally collected to class limits on capital ships (BBs, CVs). I have class limits on most CAs, and some CLs. DDs, I just want to make a decent showing on the map, but I do try to make sure I have enough smokers and subhunters to meet my needs. Aircraft, I go for 6-9 of each depending on type and how much I like it.
I have to agree with Brigman, I do the same... But I like to play where sister ships should not have the same SA that the Ship (card) earned historically.
Their ship their coffin The cruel dark sea their grave.
Thanks for your replies, gentlemen (and ladies?). Very helpful to know. I think I'm going to look to expand my destroyers and some aircraft beyond 3 units of each based on what you've shared. I don't think I can go into the 1,000+ total unit range. Currently I have 400.
Having said that, I like to play historical scenarios. What would you say are your favorite or must-have sister ships or other proxy units? Seems like some of the Japanese carriers and perhaps British battleships are important for some big scenarios.
I went through a recent offloading of multiples. I dropped a lot of the so-called "fantasy" ships (those which had never been completed or launched), some duplicates of high-value items and many ships where I had just collected too many for no apparent reason (I had something like nine HMS Ajaxes). Now I'm at a level where a reasonable game is very doable.
