There was a lot of naval wargaming happening in Hamilton, Ontario on Sunday, Aug. 25, when a group of Southern Ontario gamers gathered Sunday in the ward room of the HMCS Haida on the 77th anniversary of its launch back in 1942. (There were cupcakes and juice on the dock.)
The players hailed from Hamilton, Midland, Kitchener, Norwood and Barrie, organized by Ticat1, a diehard Axis & Allies War at Sea player. Audacity ran several Cruel Seas scenarios (in which my E-boats were soundly trashed), and Firehouse finished off the day with a Cruel Seas scenario that saw a lot of torpedoes in the water.
Ticat, Firehouse and Kevin McCaig ran several WAS scenarios, some featuring the Haida itself. Martin (sorry, didn't get last name) ran UBOOT The Board Game.
The activity in the wardroom — four games ongoing at any one time — drew the interest of passersby, who stopped to help us roll dice and played the Haida scenario.
The day was especially interesting because of the funeral service for a Royal Canadian Navy veteran, highlighted by live firing of the four-inch deck gun.
Those who don't remember their history are bound to do something or other...
