On the History Channel tonight, July 21, was a show titled "Nazis on Drugs: Hitler & the Blitzkrieg". It explains that the Nazis were all jacked up on Crystal Meth. The Army & the Luftwaffe. Pervitin was the name of the drug. It was discovered by the British in a downed German aircraft & after testing it to find out what it was, it was determined to be Crystal Meth. The Nazis were Tweakers!
Not to be outdone, the British issued their troops in North Africa Benzedrine. Also from the above mentioned program. Hitler was also quite the addict. Dr. Theodore Morell, his personal physician, kept him on quite a mix of drugs from amphetamines to opiates.
How weird! I just happened to watch the first part of that episode from the AHC on demand section called NAZI secret files. It's one of 5 episodes listed that originally aired 3 years ago. I don't know if I've been living under a rock all this time but I had never heard of such widespread drug use by the Nazi military before and how much their blitzkrieg tactics benefited from it. Anyone have any insights on how accurate this account was. Maybe some of those GI's weren't just searching corpses for a Luger.
They did say that much of their background information about the Nazi drug use was from recently declassified documents, within the last 10 years I believe they said. The release of those documents was not widely publicized according to the narrator. Some of the information was also from Dr. Morell's pesonal handwritten diary.
