I played an interesting game tonight with a coworker who was a first time player. She isn't big on games but loves naval history so I was able to convince her to play after she saw the models.
She was completely overwhelmed with fleet creation so I picked Japanese units and she just grabbed their American counterparts. For example I grabbed Yamato at 70 points so she took New Jersey at 70. I took Akagi, she took Enterprise, both at 27. Haguro for Baltimore at 20 each and so on and so on until we each had 2000pt fleets. Has anyone else ever tried fleet creation like this before? I thought it would give us a balanced game since SA synergy couldn't play a role.
I didn't tell her what she should do but if she tried to attack my BB with her DD's guns when there was another DD within range I'd let her know she had other options. I also didn't let her win but she sure whooped me.
A couple of observations from the battle: Japanese ships and planes take a lot less damage to sink than US ones, even at the same point levels. She was able to quickly grasp the naval combat and submarine stuff but had trouble with aircraft, telling them apart, figuring out what they each did, and what a DB should attack vs. a TB etc. I think next game we will do a night battle or something without aircraft. All the air phases really bogged us down.
The dice were not with me at all. I never won initiative in all 5 rounds even with flag 2, I didn't land a single torpedo hit out of approximately 40 dice, she scored 4 with half as many attempts, with 3 on Yamato to finish her off prematurely. In the end I sunk Baltimore, Laffey, and Samuel B Roberts but lost everything except a Betty and a Zero. For having completely even points at all levels it was not an even matchup.
Next time I will try and take and post pics, the action was very visual thanks to my new set of Litko tokens. I love them compared to the cardboard ones I could never pick up. I even got a few for tokens WotC never released like "activated" tokens for when a once per game ability was used. I think I might buy some more. What is everyone's must have token list?
