Hi, all! Over the holidays we worked up a Kelly's Heroes scenario after watching the movie around New Year's Day. We've play tested it three times, and, although it wasn't easy, Kelly eventually won one out of three. Here's the line-up:
Map: Any town/village map. We used Map 12. Place Objective token in a town hex. German places units first. All units must be in the town hexes, no more than three hexes away from the objective (the bank).
American player places second, but must place units only in hexes adjacent to German units. (This represents Kelly's men silently moving into position just before and during the ringing of the town bell.) It is recommended that you place Oddball's Sherman behind one of the Tigers! If you really want to stick to the film, place Kelly in the same hex as Oddball's tank.
To simulate the initial surprise attack, the Americans have initiative on Turn 1, but, more importantly, turn one starts with the Assault Phase and all U.S. attacks ignore cover during this very first attack. This simulates the complete surprise Kelly's Heroes achieved at the beginning of the assault on the town of Clermont.
Victory Conditions: Play eight turns. At the end of turn eight, U.S. player wins if he or she controls the bank hex or if all German units are eliminated except for one Tiger tank. (If only one of the Tigers remain at the end of turn eight, that Tiger joins Kelly in robbing the bank!)
German player wins if control of the bank hex is maintained through the end of turn eight.
Play test results: Kelly and his Heroes have to really hit the Germans hard in that first assault phase. The key is to get rid of one Tiger early before Oddball's tank is immobilized. If Kelly (Resourceful Hero) stays with Oddball's tank after it is destroyed, he can still take down a Disrupted Tiger with good rolls. But it ain't easy... It's a shooting match with lots of cover for the infantry. Germans want to keep their officer alive so he can eliminate Disrupted markers. Americans want Kelly, Crapgame, and Pvts Willard and Pertuko to stick around too. Remember to use the BAR Gunner to pin down attackers. Best bet seems to be knock out a Tiger, then go for the German troops. If you can clear them off, that last Tiger switches sides and you all share the gold.
We had a blast playing this!
Kelly's Heroes | Points | 35th Infantry Division
M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" Sherman | Oddball's Tank | 54 | In addition to regular Special Abilities of the E8 Sherman, this Sherman has the following special ability: "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?!?" Once per game, U.S. player may re-roll the Sherman's attack roll. |
Bazooka | Private Fisher | 4 | He actually had an M8 Rifle Grenade Launcher, but for this scenario the Americans needed more fire power. |
Thompson Gunner | Private Babra | 4
BAR Gunner | Private Petuko | 4
"Red Devil" Captain | Big Joe | 7 | I know he was an NCO, but he leads like a A&A captain... :-) |
Hunting Sniper | Gutowski | 9
Resourceful Hero | Kelly | 8
M1919 MG | Crapgame and Pvt. Willard | 9 | 99 points total |
Germans | Elements of the 1st SS Panzer Division
Tiger tank (2) | Tiger 113 & Tiger 115 | 112 | We're assuming Tiger 112 has been destroyed seconds into the battle. |
Motorized Schutzen (5) | Germans | 20
SS Haupsturmfuhrer | Commander | 7
MG42 Machine Gun Team | MG team on the roof of the bank. | 10 | 149 points total (This may seem lopsided, but Kelly's men get first strike and one of the Tigers has the potential to flip, see below.) |
