I just started getting into WaS and recently lucked out in acquiring a R. Bismarck, Bismarck, and Turpitz on the cheap. I learned only afterwards, however, about the problems with the turrets not being able to rotate properly. I've done a bit of modding in the past, but this is another level for me. Any advice or "quick" fixes that anyone can point me to?
Also, I'm coming from more of a background painting samurai and vikings and I've been dabbling a bit in some touch-up painting for WaS, mostly just some shading and highlights. As such, I'm feeling brand new when it comes to ships. I came across some really well-done pieces that added deck grain to a number of battleships. Several ships seem to have recesses where a drybrush and shade would make the deck stand out, but does anyone have any idea how would I do that on pieces like the Bismarck where the deck is flat?
First, welcome! I apologize for taking so long to reply.
The standard 'fix' for the Bismarck turrets is to glue an M3 flat washer to each of the upper turrets. These are just the right size. I had to order a pack of 100 of them online. Send me a pm if you want me to mail you a few.
There are lots of ways to paint decks. Shinnentai's are particularly beautiful. You can look at his work in the Exhibition Hall.
Thanks much for the advice and the welcome! I'll definitely look into the washers idea. Does the washer allow the turret to continue rotating, or would you need some magnets or something to make that work?
I came across some great instructions already for the Tirpitz, so when I have the time and energy I might give that a go. So far I've just been directly applying some shade and highlights without primer, just as a quick touch-up. It won't last, but it looks pretty good for the time being.
I've another question as well: I've been looking into acquiring some Japanese cruisers and battleships from Shapeways, as thay have much better dimensions than the actual WotC models I've seen so far (looking at you, Haguro). Problem is, I don't have cards for a lot of these, and it's a bit expensive to throw out 50 bucks on Ebay to get a card with a model I don't really care to use. Any ideas on where to acquire cards?
I know Forumini has custom cards, but what other options might there be, to your knowledge, beyond Ebay and Forumini?
Thanks again, and happy to join the community! I only wish I had known about this game years ago
