Ticat
I did a pre-Christmas unboxing with Ticat, splitting a case of Early War, another case of plenty from Miniature Market.
Here are my results, booster by booster.
Booster 1:
PzKpfw 38(t) R
Panzerjager I U
Belgium Bicycle Troop U
Type 99 LMG C
BEF Infantrymen C
I don’t have the 38(t), so that was a nice find. I never really wanted the Panzerjager, but now that I have it… And I am a fan of two-wheeled soldiery, so the Bicycle Troop is OK. Add to that that I welcome Poor Bloody Infantry, and the Japanese LMG is the only weak spot in the box.
Booster 2:
7TP R
T-38 Light Amphibious Tank U
Kubelwagen V U
Motorized Schutzen C
Soviet Conscript
Ticat’s eyes lit up with he saw the 7TP, which he coveted. I already have three, so we’ll talk. I can use the T-38, Kubelwagen, Schutzen and Conscript. An OK box.
Booster 3:
Valentine II R
Panzerjager I U
Mongolian Cavalry U
Canon de 75 Modele 1897 C
BEF Infantrymen C
OK, that’s weird. The same Panzerjager/BEF combo. The Valentine is a welcome addition, and I can use the cavalry. Another OK box.
Booster 4:
Junkers JU 87B Stuka R
Carra Armato M11/39 U
Polish Officer U
Type 99 LMG C
Soviet Conscript C
I see an aircraft in an AAM booster as a wasted unit, because I have so many AAAF aircraft, but Ticat really wanted the Stuka. We will trade. And why is a Polish Officer an Uncommon? Another Japanese LMG and another Conscript. Hmmm.
Booster 5:
T-26E R
Panzer II Ausf. F. U
Motorcycle Recon U
Type 99 LMG C
South African Infantry C
I have three Finn T-26s, so it works out well that Ticat really needed that unit. I’m happy with the Panzer, the Recon and the South African Infantry, but another Japanese LMG? Really?
Booster 6:
T-13B3 R
Morris Recon Car Mk. 2 U
Motorcycle Recon U
Wz36 37mm ATG C
Finnish Ski Troop C
There will be some serious trading over the T-13B3, which Ticat salivated over, but which I do not have and have never even seen. Yeah, it’s Belgium, but I have all those Bicycle Troops… The Motorcycle Recon is OK and I collect Finnish infantry, but the Morris Recon Car is the worst Uncommon ever. Who doesn’t have eight of these?
So Ticat and I did some dealing. He wanted the T-13B3, the Stuka, the T-26 and the 7TP.
I went through his trade collection and came away with: Matilda II, Gloster Meteor and Dornier Do335 (yes I said I don’t collect AAM aircraft, but AAAF doesn’t have the Meteor or the D0335), and some WAS items I needed: U-2511, U-66 x2, B6N2 Jill and TBF Avenger. Also promised to come my way is a Shapeways escort carrier USS Sangamon, and Ticat received a recently acquired and surplus Amtrak.
We both came away certain we got a good deal, which is the best trade.
We capped the day with a Russian-Finn Winter War scenario. I played the Finns, defending the Mannerheim Line. He played the Soviets, whose task was to seize two of three villages. We used Combat Zone winter maps — the snow really sets the mood.
Sorry, I did not take photos. We were sweating over dice rolls. I made almost every cover roll I threw, to Ticat’s general distress, while my artillery attacks were a total waste against his armour and infantry.
My two pillboxes were enough to slow his advance such that the most he could hope for was to seize one village and contest another — a draw at best. We called it there.
