The Big Red One at Piano Lupo, Sicily, 11th July 1943.
Having secured a bridgehead in the vinicity of Gela, the Big Red One infantry division now faced the task of repulsing the inevitable axis counter attack. At Piano Lupo the americans had fortified themselves after capturing 9 italian anti tank guns. They had also received reinforcements from the 82 airborne division but still lacked tanks.
General Guzzoni the commander in Sicily sent the italian division "Livorno" equiped with french B1 tanks as well as the fallschirmjagger panzer division "Hermann Goering" against the american positions.
This attack would be poorly coordinated due to a difficult chain of command. But still the attack was carried on to recapture Piano Lupo and its road leading to the beaches.
Confusion also reigned on the american side as 23 air transport planes bringing reinforcements were shot down by allied flak guns...
The map:
East- Map 1 (lower left corner)- Map D2 (lower left corner) - west
On map D2 replace the 4 "dry" hexes with city hexes
replace the brush with a forest hex
link the lone city hex to the 4 city hexes with another city
this is Piano Lupo, Sicily.
Half hexes are in play.
Special rules:
Poor axis coordination: Italian and german units cant stack in the same hex.
US fortified position: the US can place 2 fortified positions on any city hex. A fortified position can hold 3 units and gives +1 cover. Normal stacking rules applies.
