Monument to General Kleeberg
BACKGROUND:
After the defeats of Brest and Kobyn, the Independent Operational Group Polesie of General Kleeberg (which includes, among others, the 60th and 50th Infantry Division) is joined by the cavalry brigade Podlaska in an attempt to break through to the south; the goal being to reach the Romanian border and establish a "reduced" waiting an Anglo-French military intervention. To counter this retreat, the German HeadQuarter commits the XIV Mechanized Corps of General von Wietersheim including 13th and 29th Infantry-Division (Mot.) For four days the Germans will face fierce resistance, but the Polish soldiers used their last ammos and food, Kleeberg decided to capitulate on October 6, ending the Polish campaign.
But what would happened if the Polish army had been faster than the German and managed to escape to the Romanian border?
