Here is some Information I hope will help you all out, and make life a little easier for those that have thought about casting there models in Resin.
Firstly what you will need is........
Silicone with Activator.
A Beaker with measurments printed on it. or a small bucket and cooking scales.
Two mixing sticks.
a small container.
double sided sticky tape
Heat gun or Hair Dryer
The model or Models your going to mould.
and the two part Resin.
DON'T WORRY
Its Easier than you think, start of small and practice if you like.
But what I will show you is the Easiest way I have found to do it.
I have been using Silicone for over 25 years, and the one thing that has changed in that time, is the price.
It is so much cheaper than it use to be, I work in the Film and TV Industry. so Im always moulding parts to reproduce them.
" I have spent Thousands of pounds in the past on Silicone "
yes it use to be that expensive......but then I use to use 100 to 300 litres of the Stuff !
But with the advent of Ebay, it is so much easier to get your hands on the specialist Stuff
Silicone is a Rubber compound that stays in a wet state, Until you add the Activator. once the Activator is added and stirred in, the chemical bonding process begins and in about 20-30 minutes you have a solid rubber.
Why use Silicone.
You can pour the Silicone over and object, and once it is set.
you have a mould that you can pour resin into.
But the Beauty of the Silicone is that while it will hold its form on a flat surface. you can bend and flex the silicone to remove the object once the resin has set.
However, A word of warning.......
Never try to mould anything made of Rubber !
like a model car tire for instance, The silcone will react. and not set, leaving you with a gloopy mess
Metals, Plastics, Wood are all fine. but not any Rubber items.
Now Normaly when I mould I use a process called " de-gassing "
what this is, is a vacum chamber to pull the airbubbles out of the silcone before it sets.
I use this when im moulding Props or Helmets and Armour.
But what we are doing here, you dont have to worry about that.
it is just a case of.....
Mix the Silicone and activator together 10% ACTIVATOR to 100% SILICONE in a jug or small bucket.
Pour the Silicone from a Height in a thin stream, over your model.
then stir the silicone with a small mixing stick and apply heat from a Heat gun or hair dryer, Stir and heat, stir and Heat.
what this will do is relase and push out the Airbubbles,
This is How we Make Easy Silicone Moulds.......
Firstly Either purchase your Silicone and Activator from Ebay or your local Hobby store.
you dont need to buy a huge amount, 1 Litre "or 1 kg ! will do for now. plenty to make a good few moulds with but at a very low cost to purchase.
Most Silicones are 10% Acitvator to 100% Silicone.
some are only 5% Acivator. But the product you buy will tell you on the information labels.
there are now so many out there. and the ones I have used are very good.
If you can, Remove things like the gun turrets. these will be easier to mould seperatly.the area underneath the barrels will creat bubbles, and not look very nice on the cast, and be a pain to clean up. make less work for yourself !
you can use a tub or container for laying the model inside.
or make up a simple box Like I have here to pour the Silicon into.
the trick is to use double sided sticky tape at the bottom of the container. de-tack it before you stick the model to the bottom. use the grease on your finger, or a piece of cloth to make it "less sticky" so you can get your model off the base once the silicone is dry
