With the growing size of the Navy and of ships themselves. A Purpose built repairship was ordered in 1937. Akashi entered service in 1939, expected to conduct as much as 40% of maitenence work for the fleet. State of the work tools and equipment allowed her to support the fleet from Truk lagoon. US carrier airraid damaged her in febuary 1944 and she relocated to Palau where where she was sunk by further raids the following month.
