On the night of the 16th april 1943, the small convoy lead by the Cigno was attacked by 2 Royal Navy destroyers. Despite being drastically outclassed, cigno and her sister cassiopeia engaged the enemy. Crippling one hms Pakenham, for the loss of the Cigno. It was a rare instance of successful defense of italian convoys as the war turn against the axis.
