La Argentina was an export version of the British Arethusa-class trade protection cruisers enlarged to be used as a training ship for naval cadets. While her British counterparts were ultimately used as fleet escorts, La Argentina performed the class's designed function of neutrality patrols and escorted merchant vessels throughout the war. With the longest range and the most modern accommodations of any Argentinean ship of the time she operated independently from the other cruisers and battleships of the Armada de la República Argentina and showed the flag around the world.
