Finally wrapped up my early German grey group. It's taken me a while to get motivated to finish them. I think after this, I'm going to try and paint similar, small groups only. Kind of mind-numbing to be constantly switching between types of units even with a similar paint job.
Very nice indeed! Do you do a pin wash or, what do you use for this? I like the dark recessed lines.
Thanks!
Yeah, I was a bit gun-shy of doing a full unit wash since I had a weird reaction my first attempt and, essentially, had to repaint everything.
I used the Army Painter Uniform Grey primer and I love the color! But I didn't put put anything over it and the wash just had a weird reaction, sheeting off in some places and pooling in other, weird places. In the future, I think I might try to do a matte varnish and then do a full wash. The first round of grey AFVs I didn't have this problem with the wash so I was thrown off.
Once I repainted the units, I put on a gloss varnish and then did a pin wash. Much more time-consuming, but I'm really happy with the results.
I like your method. I use Black Temper paint mixed with water and 1 drop of dish soap (breaks the elasticity of the water). I use a small glass baby food jar and mix 1 part Temper paint to 3 parts water and the drop of dish soap. I use a large soft brush and gently mix it up. First I give the model a coat of Dul-coat. After that has dried I do a complete coverage doing one side at a time ( right, bottom, left and top last letting each side dry before going on to the next). Once this has dried I use plain water and a paper towel (to soak up excess from brush) I get the brush wet, dab some of the excess water off on the paper towel and remove the wash from the raised surface leaving wash in all the recesses. You will have to rinse the brush often and continue. What I like about how I do this is if I don't like the outcome I can remove the wash and do it over with no repainting. It helps to go from the top down when removing the wash. On desert paint jobs I do the same but with Brown Temper paint. Once your satisfied with the results give it another coat of Dul-cote to seal it. Next is to do the dry brushing of the raised surfaces. This method has worked for me for years.
It sounds like my usual method and your usual method are quite similar...although I generally use a mix of Secret Weapon and Army Painter washes. I've tried mixing my own several times and it's never quite consistent.
What I don't usually do is give it a matte coat before I start the wash. Usually, I don't find that necessary, but I'll try that after this last experience with washing these grey units.
