Context: During October and November of 1942, the Americans and Japanese were locked in a death struggle over control of the tiny island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The Americans had constructed an airbase on the island known as Henderson Field, which posed a significant threat to Japanese convoys carrying troops and supplies to the island. To neutralize Henderson Field, the Japanese will send a large naval task force to bombard Henderson Field, and to draw the US navy into a decisive battle and destroy it. In order to avoid air attack from Henderson Field, the attack will commence under the cover of darkness.
