I recently purchased the San Giorgio from Ebay, and was wondering what the general consensus was on how good/usable the two armored cruisers (Georgios Averof and San Giorgio) are. Personally, I think that they are good ships, but what do you guys think? Also, I have 4 Georgios Averofs, and was wondering if anyone else was having this problem.
Well I have the Georgios Averof (17pt CA) and we have used it in 5 battles so far. My daughter calls it the battlewagon. The secondaries on it can punish CA and DDs. It has a decent AA and with protection I can't get to it with airpower effectively. Subs are a problem but that is what escorts are for. I think the most effective approach is the swarm with long lance torp ships (IJN CAs, CLs and DDs) but you will lose some ships likely unless you get lucky with rolls.... It is a priority target for me... of course my daughter never rows the slow 2 and she usually has it paired with the Montpelier or other USN CA..... nasty business for my italian fleet.
The Georgios is a match for any Axis heavy cruiser if it can catch them. I’ll usually use it as the bait, move it towards an objective so the enemy has to react. Just make them come to the Georgios. It’s armor is decent and it’s guns outclass anything the axis have except for the German panzerschiffe.
I like them. With the heavy armor, your opponent has to dedicate a good attack like prime gunnery or a torpedo to have a serious chance at hitting these.
I'm a big fan of San Giorgio. As Italian cruisers go, its a bruiser of a ship. I really like the gambit of using its Coastal Deployment SA in combination with a Heavy Shore Battery, Subs and the Team's Advance Naval Base (to deploy small, smoking DDs). On the right map, the Italians can get a lot of units out in the center of the map on turn 1 and make life for opposing destroyers and cruisers pretty painful.
In a larger point game where you are screening your bigger ships I can see that being especially useful. You could realistically vital 2 destroyers with that and another one with the shore battery.
That's the general idea. Works well with VA5 DDs like Espero and Ascari operating from Advanced Naval Bases. Jump on subs and play havoc. Smoke from those DDs can be tricky though...I've made the error of laying smoke in front of San Giorgio and the HSB. Its great on turn 1 to avoid counterfire, but then you help your opponent out big time on turn 2!
Just got the HMAS Canberra the other day from an eBay purchase. While it has no special abilities and so so AA it looks to carry a lot of dice on main artillery. Although the 3/9 armor would preclude her from this armored cruiser designation.
